  • Patent number: 5194550
Abstract: A (meth)acrylate-based adhesive polymer composition is improved by the use of itaconic acid and a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, such as hydroxyethyl acrylate, polymerized therein. From 1 to 5 weight percent itaconic acid and from 1.5 to 17 weight percent hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate are used to improve the combinations of tack and shear strength in these adhesive polymers. With an optional tackifier, these polymers are found especially useful in pressure sensitive adhesive applications.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 7, 1992
Date of Patent: March 16, 1993
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventors: Robert W. Rance, Etienne R. D. A. Lazarus
  • Patent number: 5124422
Abstract: Improved adhesive polymers based on monovinylidene aromatic and conjugated diene monomers (e.g. styrene and butadiene) are prepared using a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and itaconic acid to provide improved combinations of shear strength and tack. Itaconic acid is used in the range of 0.5 to 5 percent by weight and the hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate in the range of 1.5 to 17 weight percent. Hydroxyethyl acrylate is a preferred hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate compound.

    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
    Inventors: Robert W. Rance, Etienne R. D. A. Lazarus
  • Patent number: 4506051
Abstract: The low temperature properties (i.e., the stability of the emulsion upon repeated freeze-thaw cycles and/or the fluidity of the emulsion at low temperatures such as -20.degree. C.) of a self-inverting water-in-oil emulsion of a water-soluble polymer are improved by incorporating an N,N-dialkyl amide in the emulsion.
