    Abstract: A diode-pumped laser with a direct edge coupling of a pump beam is provided. The laser includes a microchip laser cavity optically pumped by a laser diode emitting an astigmatic pump beam having a substantially elliptical beam cross-section at an output laser diode facet. The microchip laser cavity is disposed at a substantial distance exceeding 0.001? from the laser diode pump where the astigmatic pump beam has a greatly reduced ellipticity, providing high laser output efficiency without coupling lens element between the laser cavity and the laser diode pump. The pumping arrangement is favourable for single-mode lasing. In some embodiments, the laser cavity includes nonlinear crystal for intra-cavity SHG, a saturable absorber for passive Q-switching and mode locking, and a polarizing prism.

    Abstract: A laser apparatus for generating optical pulses is disclosed, said laser apparatus has a reflecting gain element preferably including a fiber gain medium. The reflecting gain element is coupled to a controllable reflecting/transmitting module having a reflecting state and a transmitting state, wherein the controllable reflecting/transmitting means are operable to switch from the transmitting state to the reflecting state to initiate a build-up of an optical pulse, and to switch back to the transmitting state for outputting the optical pulse before it reaches the reflecting/transmitting means after a cavity roundtrip. In a preferred embodiment, the controllable reflecting/transmitting module includes an acousto-optic switch at an output end of a laser operable to output the optical pulse in zeroth diffraction order.

    Abstract: An optical fiber amplifier has an amplification stage that uses an optical fiber pumped with pump energy of a first wavelength that oscillates through the gain medium. In one embodiment, the pumping is essentially a cavity resonator that is coupled to either end of the optical fiber such that oscillating pump energy is directed into one end of the fiber and out the other, as it reflects back and forth between the ends of the cavity. Highly reflective gratings are used to maintain the oscillation of the pump energy, and a pump energy source, such as pumped doped optical fiber, is coupled to at least one of the gratings. In another embodiment, the pump source comprises multiple reflectors that are employed at each end of the fiber, and independent pump sources each having a slightly different wavelength within the absorption spectrum of the amplifier are coupled together, such that two pump wavelengths are simultaneously oscillated through the gain medium.

If used without a signal reflection apparatus, the invention may be operated as a resonant pumped fiber amplifier. A resonant pumped laser may use a wavelength stabilized pump source to maximize pumping efficiency, the stabilization being provided by optical feedback.
