  • Publication number: 20160252673
Abstract: A hollow core fiber exhibiting selective birefringence is provided. The selective birefringence is induced by harnessing properties of surface modes that cause transmission loss and are otherwise considered as detrimental. Birefringence and signal loss in a preferred polarization state are engineered by fabricating an asymmetrical web structure surrounding the core. In one implementation the asymmetry in the web structure is induced by a thicker core web preferably at the core inner cladding interface, by selectively introducing defect cells at the hollow core inner cladding interface. The hollow core fiber further includes shunt cores to facilitate near single-mode transmission by additionally using intermittent bend-induced index matching to resonantly couple unwanted core modes including one or more, higher order modes to shunt modes.

  • Publication number: 20150104131
Abstract: Shunt fibers having a photonic bandgap cladding region including one or more hollow guiding regions of which one guiding region is configured as the core and one or more other guiding regions are configured as shunts, respectively, provide nearly single mode transmission in the core. The effective mode index of unwanted core modes and modes in one or more shunts are matched closely enough such that higher order modes will selectively couple to the shunt modes by resonant phase matching in the presence of fiber variations. The shunts are designed to have relatively higher losses thereby effectively dissipating power in the higher order modes at a faster rate.

  • Publication number: 20070077438
Abstract: The reproducibility of preforms made by solution doping is significantly improved by adding an internal heat source, such as N2O, as a processing gas during the soot deposition process. The addition of the internal heat source gas results in forming a surface soot layer which exhibits a relatively uniform and consistent morphology. The improvement in the soot surface morphology results in improving the uniformity of the amount of solution dopant retained in the soot layer from preform to preform.

  • Publication number: 20060179888
Abstract: Fluorine doping of trench layers in MCVD preforms is enhanced by exposing a silica soot layer, produced by MCVD, to a fluorine-containing gas at high pressure. The high pressure exposure is integrated into the MCVD process.
