    Abstract: A submersible vehicle's hull has an outer wall that is at least partially constructed of a multi-wall fabric having a sealed space between at least two walls thereof. The sealed space is controllably filled with one of air, water, and a combination of air and water in order to control the buoyancy of the hull formed from the multi-wall fabric. Means are provided for propelling and steering the hull in the water. The interior volume of the hull can remain dry or can be filled with water for a wet mode of operation.

    Abstract: A system converts energy of waves into rotational energy, friction, heat, hydrodynamic lift, and drag to extract energy from waves to reduce their amplitudes and increase their periods to reduce destructive effects on shorelines. This also allows sand to move toward land while capturing and depositing land-ward sand and particulate matter from eroding away from the beach. A plurality of cylindrical-shaped turbines or hydro-foils are stacked in water to rotate in response to energy from waves to dissipate wave energy and renourish beaches and shorelines with sand and other particulate matter. Rounded bearing surfaces are in contact with one another for frictionally engaging one another, and a pair of elongate anchoring members embedded in the sea floor hold the turbines or hydro-foils above the sea floor in an aligned stacked relationship via end portions to assure their frictional engagement.

    Abstract: An integrated water sensing actuator is based on a fibrous cellulosic material having anisotropic moisture-absorbing properties such that it's dried-in strain is greatest along one axis thereof. A plug of the dry and compressed fibrous cellulosic material has a powder material coated thereon and mixed therewith. The plug is compressed along it's axis of greatest dried-in strain and is fitted in a water-permeable housing adjacent a piston. The powder material is inert with respect to the cellulosic material and initiates a chemical reaction when exposed to water such that a product of the chemical reaction is water. Immersion of the housing in water causes expansion of the plug and corresponding movement of the piston.

A pressure control system coupled to the sealed chamber maintains a predetermined pressure differential between a pressure inside the sealed chamber and a pressure outside of the sealed chamber. The pressure differential causes the mirror film to deflect parabolically in one of a concave or convex fashion thereby defining the mirror's shape.

An integrated water sensor/actuator is coupled to the third portion to provide the motive force that moves the third portion to its second position. Munitions containing fire retardant can be targeted accurately at single hot spots, isolated structures, and along fire lines or can be quickly and accurately dropped to create a protected zone behind an area that has been made not to burn by munitions to protect fire fighters trapped in the path of runaway fires. Munitions are deployed from aircraft by military crewmen without requiring additional training.

    Abstract: A system and method are provided for improving vehicle safety in a crash situation for a vehicle having mountable vehicle components. A plurality of pyrotechnic bolts are used to mechanically couple at least a portion of the vehicle components to the vehicle. A force measuring device measures forces experienced by the vehicle during a crash and produces a signal indicative thereof. This signal is compared with a threshold. An activation signal is generated when the threshold is attained. Failure of the pyrotechnic bolts is then initiated in accordance with a prescribed plan.

    Abstract: A detonation arrestor cuts the detonating cord of a dud line charge to prevent the pressure wave from a nearby explosion from sympathetically detonating the dud line charge. A housing of the detonation arrestor has a transverse passageway to receive the detonating cord of the dud line charge and an axial bore intersecting the passageway. A cutter piston having a cutter blade is disposed in the bore and is sized to permit axial displacement by a shallow dish-shaped diaphragm spring. The diaphragm spring has its center adjacent to one end of the cutter piston and laterally extends from the bore to be secured to the housing along its round periphery in a sealed relationship. The diaphragm spring is formed in the configuration of a Belleville spring from a spring material providing strength, rigidity, and spring modulus to snap to an extended position when displaced to a position past an over center position by an impinging pressure wave.

    Abstract: A rocket propelled textile and cordage net fire extinguishing system is deployed from a platform at a safe standoff distance from a fire. The rocket propelled matrix-like net flies over, lands on, and drapes over the burning site. A detonating means, or detonating network on the net is actuated to rupture spaced-apart canisters on the net that are filled with halon and/or other fire extinguishing compounds. The detonating network quickly disperses the fire extinguishing compounds to engulf and extinguish the fire safely and efficiently without unduly exposing fire fighters to danger. The net fire extinguisher system can extinguish fires aboard a maritime vessel, particularly when the burning craft cannot be safely boarded or burns so fiercely that it cannot be approached closely. The net fire extinguisher system can combat highly dangerous fires including chemical and oil fires, (oil rig fires) on land and at sea.

    Abstract: An underwater high energy acoustic communications device has inner shell-like structure having an outer surface connected to first ends of tuning springs and outer shell-like structure having an inner surface connected to second ends of the tuning springs to concentrically locate and space the inner and outer structures apart. Explosive units mounted on the inner surface of the outer structure each includes an explosive squib, rigid tube, and projectile. A micro-controller feeds firing signals over electrical leads to the explosive units to detonate them and fire their projectiles to strike the inner structure that emits ringing high-energy broadband acoustic signals that are propagated into surrounding seawater. A transducer connected to the micro controller receives acoustic signals from a remote source to activate the micro-controller to generates preprogrammed sequences of firing signals to propagate coded messages by the high-energy broadband, acoustic signals.

    Abstract: A line charge for deploying explosive charges across obstacles and mines to clear a safe lane has explosive charges spaced apart on a common detonating cord, and axial passageways in the explosive charges are sized to permit free longitudinal travel of the detonating cord through them. A composite strength member includes an inner fabric sleeve of high strength flexible material covered by an outer sleeve of thermoset/thermoplastic material and contains the explosive charges and detonating cord. Heat-curing the inner fabric sleeve and outer sleeve shrinks and conforms them to the outer contours of the explosive charges and combines the high strength flexible material and thermoset/thermoplastic material. Composite strength member absorbs energy during deployment of the line charge over its entire length and circumference and absorbs more energy prior to structural failure to allow the use of more powerful rocket motors to fly longer line charges from much greater and safer standoff distances.

    Abstract: A munition is provided for deploying a molten payload within a target. A plurality of holes are formed in the munition's projectile body about the circumference thereof. A seal closes off each hole. A firing mechanism is mounted in the munition's nose cone and is capable of generating energy of initiation upon deformation of the nose cone. A first burnable material is housed in the projectile body and is coupled to the firing mechanism to receive the energy of initiation. The first burnable material extends in a tree-like fashion along a plurality of connected paths in the projectile body with each of the connected paths terminating at one of the seals. A second burnable material fills the voids in the projectile body surrounding the first burnable material. The first burnable material has a lower threshold of combustion than the second burnable material while the second burnable material burns hotter than the first burnable material.

    Abstract: A break line launch energy damper and recoil limiting system for line charges absorbs and dissipates launch energy over time during deployment of line charges. This system limits the amount of recoil energy that can act upon the line charge and allows for linear deployment without recoil that might hinder the effectiveness of the rear lengths of the line charge. An elongate strength member connects the line charge to an inertial drag, such as a parachute and/or container for the line charge. A plurality of lines having different tensile strengths are appropriately connected to sequentially part when their tensile strengths are exceeded to thereby absorb and dissipate energy during deployment of the line charge.
