    Abstract: The present invention refers to catalysts having high catalytic activity and selectivity, consisting of mixed oxides of copper, aluminum and magnesium and/or calcium, free from chromium, in established proportions. The invention also relates to the preparation thereof. Another object of the present invention is the use of these catalysts in hydrogenation processes, preferably direct hydrogenation of vegetable oil esters to fatty alcohols, represented by formula: CH3—(CH2)n—OH, wherein n varies from 7 to 23.
