Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatus for manipulating electromagnetic radiation such as laser beams. A method and apparatus for correcting magnification chromatic aberration utilises one or more dispersive lenses such that long wavelength components are magnified less than short wavelength components. A telecentric relay is preferred to achieve this aim. Further, the use of polarisers to block the undesired zeroth order components of diffraction emanating from acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) is disclosed. Furthermore, specific designs of AOD including narrow transducer AODs which produce a diverging acoustic wave and AODs having two transducers and a selection switch are disclosed.

The method includes the steps of receiving currency notes from a first authorized person, ascertaining a value and at least one further parameter associated with each received currency note, receiving a request from a second authorized person to receive currency notes for transferring within the financial institution, dispensing the requested currency notes to the second authorized person, associating at least one parameter of each dispensed currency note with the second authorized person and receiving a notification from a device within the financial institution that the dispensed currency notes have been received at the device.

The media storage unit comprises: a first rotary storage device; a second rotary storage device aligned with the first rotary storage device; and storage tape wound around each of the first and second storage devices and including calibration marks disposed along one side of the storage tape. The media storage unit also comprises a sensor for detecting the calibration marks; an entry/exit port between the first and second rotary storage devices through which media items can be inserted or removed; and a controller operable to rotate the first and/or second storage devices to move the storage tape forwards or backwards while sensing the calibration marks to locate either (i) a media item of the desired type for a dispense transaction, or (ii) a space on the storage tape of the required type for a deposit transaction.

Each time the tool is authorized to connect to a transaction terminal the database is accessed by a processor and a determination is made whether one or more parameter of the transaction terminal lies within a threshold amount of a statistical measure based upon the parametric performance data of the collection of transaction terminals.
