Patent number: 6668591Abstract: A system for cooling molds in a glassware forming machine includes a pair of mold arms mounted on a hinge post for movement toward and away from each other, and at least one mold part carried by each mold arm and adapted to cooperate with each other to form a glassware blank mold or blow mold. Each mold part includes at least one coolant passage having an inlet and an outlet disposed at one end of the mold part, and each mold arm has inlet and outlet coolant flow passages operatively coupled to the inlet and outlet of the mold part mounted on that arm. A liquid coolant source and a liquid coolant return are disposed adjacent to the hinge post. A first coolant passage extends through the hinge post between the coolant source and the inlet flow passages in the mold arms, and a second coolant passage extends through the hinge post between the outlet coolant flow passages in the mold arms and the coolant return.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2001Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventor: Robin L. Patent number: 6442976Abstract: A system and method of cooling glassware molds by directing liquid coolant to the blank or blow mold halves of a glassware forming machine through an enclosed pivotal rotary union-type structure. A coolant manifold is carried by each pivotal mold arm, and communicates with coolant inlet and outlet ports at the lower end of each mold part. The manifold is connected by a floating shaft seal and a rotary union assembly and a crank arm to a coolant source and coolant return in the section box of the associated machine section. Each pivotal connection—i.e., between the section box and the crank arm, between the crank arm and the rotary union assembly, and between the rotary union assembly and the floating shaft seal—comprises a bi-directional rotary union for feeding liquid coolant to the manifold and mold parts, and returning coolant from the manifold and mold parts.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2000Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.Inventor: Robin L. Patent number: 6047567Abstract: A unitary shear blade (20) for shearing a plurality of spaced apart streams of molten glass into individual gobs, the shear blade having a free end (20a) and an opposed end (20b). The free end is provided with a plurality of side-by-side shearing surfaces (22, 24, 26) each of which has a generally V-shaped machined shearing edge. A plurality of fastener receiving openings (28) extends through the shear blade at locations adjacent the opposed ends thereof to permit the shear blade to be removably secured to a carriage (10) by a plurality of threaded fasteners (12).Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1998Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.Inventor: Robin L. Patent number: 6038888Abstract: A glass gob delivery system for conveying gobs of molten glass from an oscillating gob delivery chute to a blank mold of a glass container forming machine of the I.S. type. The delivery system comprises an elongate trough that extends downwardly from an inlet to an outlet and a deflector with an inlet near the outlet from the trough and an outlet near the blank mold. The trough has a cross-section in the form of an upwardly facing U whose opposed legs extend parallel or substantially parallel to one another, the spacing between the opposed legs tapering gradually from a greater spacing at the inlet to a lesser spacing at the outlet.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1997Date of Patent: March 21, 2000Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.Inventors: Robin L. Flynn, Dan M. Hayes, George A. Nickey

Patent number: 5987925Abstract: A parallel shear apparatus (20) for simultaneously shearing a plurality of streams of molten glass (A, B, C) into gobs comprising opposed carriages (22, 24) which are repetitively moved along rectilinear opposed paths toward and away from one another by a unidirectionally acting servo motor/gear reducer (44) acting through an oscillating bell crank (30). Each of the carriages carries a plurality of shear blades (40a, 40b, 40c/42a, 42b, 42c) which cooperate with one another to shear the glass streams into gobs when the carriages are positioned close to one another. The shear blades carried by each of the carriages have internal flow passages (66) to permit the blades to be internally liquid cooled by liquid entering the carriages from inlet lines (52, 56), and the blades carried by one of the carriages (22) are biased by compression springs (82) into contact with the blades carried by the other carriage (24) to prevent excessive contact loads between the blades in their shearing positions.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1997Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.Inventor: Robin L. Patent number: 5897677Abstract: A glassware manufacturing system in which hot glass containers from an individual section machine are directed by an endless conveyor through a container inspection station. A container to be removed from the conveyor is identified by the inspection equipment for calibration purposes. An air jet is controlled by the inspection equipment for selectively removing the container from the conveyor into a trap, within which a progressively increasing force is applied to the container for arresting motion of the container without physical damage. The container may then be removed from the trap by an operator for manual inspection to calibrate the inspection equipment.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1997Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Contianer Inc.Inventor: Robin L. Flynn

Patent number: 5893942Abstract: An invert arm assembly for a glass container forming machine of the I.S. type, the invert arm assembly having an opposed pair of invert arm segments that are movable toward and away from one another and define one or more neck ring assembly receiving apertures when the invert arm segments are disposed adjacent to one another. A neck ring assembly is placed in each aperture and is locked in place with respect to the invert arm segments. Each neck ring assembly can be removed from the aperture in which it is located by inserting a portion of a hand tool in a portion of the invert arm segments to unlock the neck ring assembly from the aperture without moving the invert arm segments with respect to one another.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1997Date of Patent: April 13, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.Inventors: George A. Nickey, Robin L. Flynn, Dudley T. Olson
