Publication number: 20040122574Abstract: A method for adjusting a plurality of vehicle cockpit devices via a two-part process that utilizes device position constraints to determine candidate arrangements and then, ultimately, recommended arrangements of the vehicle cockpit devices to determine a desired setting of the various devices. The position constraints are determined using positioning data obtained from an occupant. An exploratory search routine is used to determine the candidate arrangements with the cockpit devices being moved to each candidate arrangement so that the occupant can be queried concerning the desirability of each such arrangement. The occupant's responses are then stored for later retrieval. Thereafter, a plurality of recommended arrangements of the cockpit devices are determined using a meta-heuristic pattern search along with a neural network search accelerator that permits screening of each recommended arrangement.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2002Publication date: June 24, 2004Inventors: Robert R. Patent number: 6702535Abstract: A friction stir rivet is rotated and driven through a first fusible workpiece into an engaged second fusible workpiece, causing local portions of the first and second workpieces to plasticize. A slideable cap contacts the exposed surface of the first workpiece shortly after the process begins. The cap acts as a retaining element limiting plasticized material from escaping during the process. As the rivet is further driven into the members the cap slides up the rivet and actuates an angled stirring member to increase the stir radius around the body of the rivet. Once the rivet is driven into the first and second workpieces, rotation is stopped and the plasticized material cools and hardens around the rivet, creating a weld joining the workpieces and encompassing the rivet, which provides additional mechanical strength.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2003Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Robin Stevenson, Pei-Chung Wang

Patent number: 6634627Abstract: A pneumatic spring having a piston and rod assembly operatively mounted in a gas-charged cylinder tube which expands when an associated closure such as a lift gate of a vehicle is released from its locked position. The force of the pneumatic spring assists the swinging movement of the lift gate on its hinges relative to the bodywork of the vehicle. As the lift gate opens, the pneumatic spring expands with the piston rod telescoping outwardly of the cylinder tube, which operates to pull a dust tube normally surrounding the cylinder tube. This around the tube until a stop ring secured to the end of the dust engages a stop collar operatively mounted on the cylinder tube. This positively limits the expansion of the gas spring and thereby establishes the open position of the lift gate.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2001Date of Patent: October 21, 2003Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Robin Stevenson
