Abstract: Disclosed are small model pit launch horizontal direction drills suitable for drilling a substantially horizontal bore hole and laying pipe underground from within a surface dug pit. The devices comprise a stationary frame and a carriage component competent to move forward and back along the frame and drill and retrieve an attached drill stem through an aperture in the frame. The carriage components are configured to allow an operator to straddle the carriage and operate the device from a seated position within the frame component interior.

Abstract: A compact, open path vertical cable pulling apparatus, having a low center of gravity and composed of two detachable, single person hand-portable components. The apparatus is competent to pull cable horizontally through space underground with a pulling force in the range of at least about 20 to 100 tons using low pressure flow hydraulics and has utility in the cable pulling industries, including in the drilling and horizontal directional drilling industries, and as part of a method for pulling cable through space, including pulling cable through space in the pipe bursting and trenchless pipe replacement industries.

The cable gripper jaws have utility in the cable gripping fields, including in the drilling and horizontal directional drilling industries, and as part of a method for pulling cable through space, including pulling cable through space in the pipe bursting and trenchless pipe replacement industries.

Abstract: Disclosed is a bursting head device or tool whose interior accommodates a pulley system competent to engage a pulling cable. The pulley can comprise a wheel on an axle or shaft designed to support movement and change of direction of the pulling cable and can include a groove or channel around its circumference to locate the cable. The improved bursting head device is competent to increase the effective pulling force or capacity of a bursting head pulling machine and can increase the machine's effective range of replacement pipe diameters.

Abstract: An articulating, rotating pipe bursting head device is provided. More particularly, the improved pipe bursting head device disclosed herein comprises a coupling means at the back or posterior end of the bursting pipe head device which connects the bursting pipe head device to the replacement or product pipe, typically through a universal duct puller attached to the front or anterior end of the product pipe. In one preferred embodiment, the coupling means allows for articulation of the replacement pipe relative to the bursting pipe head device. In another preferred embodiment, the articulating coupling means allows for articulation from 0° through 90°. In another embodiment, the coupling means allows for rotation of the replacement pipe relative to the pipe bursting head device. In another embodiment this rotating coupling means allows for 360° rotation. Thus, the present disclosure describes an articulating, rotating bursting pipe head device and method of use.

The devices are compact, light-weight, easy to maneuver and suitable for utility contractor applications exhibiting on the order of about 800-15,000 lbs of push/pull force. Also disclosed herein are improved means and components for easily and quickly breaking drill stem joints, including integrated, positionable collar wrenches and breakout wrenches.

Also provided are quick release manifolds for cable holding grippers and cable pulling grippers for use with both single cylinder and dual cylinder piston assemblies. A chassis and cable pulling system also are provided for trenchless pipe extraction applications and which accommodate closed path piston assemblies. Small and large pipe diameter bursting head devices also are provided with integrated cable gripping and release assemblies. Also provided are methods for sealing cable ends.

Abstract: A timed, mechanical grip and release wire rope gripper device and system utilizing a pivot mechanism to transfer cable pulling load to the gripper members for opening and closing an axial cable channel or bore defined by the gripper members. The pivot mechanism can act as a hinge for lateral movement of the gripper members or as a pivot point for rotating the gripper members. The mechanism supports substantially even pressure along the cable gripping surface during operation without seizing or excessive cable biting.

Abstract: Provided are articulating, rotating pipe bursting head devices for bursting a buried pipe and simultaneously pulling a replacement pipe through the same location. The bursting heads can comprise an integrated, substantially hollow cone body having one or more cutting knives arranged radially about its outer surface, and an end cap at its posterior end. Protruding from the posterior end of the end cap is a swiveling quick release coupling means for linking the bursting head to a replacement pipe carrier such as a universal duct puller. The swiveling quick release coupling means allows for rotation and articulation of the replacement pipe relative to the bursting head during operation, enhancing entry of the replacement pipe into an existing pipe underground. The bursting head body further can comprise an axial opening at its anterior end for receiving a cable, an internal magnetized cable gripping mechanism and a quick-release tool.
