  • Patent number: 9693849
Abstract: A hernia repair prosthesis comprises a segmented frame forming a closed loop where a first segment comprises a helical hollow tube and a second segment comprises a solid strand. Both segments are preferably a metal exhibiting shape memory properties and the two segments are assembled with end portions of the second segment inserted into the lumen at opposed end portions of the first segment with a clearance fit. At manufacture, a covering layer of a bio-absorbable polymer on the end portions of the second strand is sufficiently sized to create a temporary interference fit between the two segments to inhibit relative movement between them. The ability of the intercoupled segment to move relative to one another is restored upon degradation of the polymer due to exposure to body fluids following implantation of the prostheses. A prosthetic fabric is attached to the segmented frame.

  • Publication number: 20140364877
Abstract: An anchor for adhering a mesh patch to a defect in an abdominal wall in the course of a hernia repair procedure comprises a tubular metal shank having a radial flange at one end and a pair of deployable wing members hinged to the shank at its opposite end, the wings when undeployed cooperating with one another to form a pointed tip end to facilitate passage through the mesh patch, a layer of fascia and into muscle tissue. The anchor further includes a manual actuator for spreading the pair of wings apart to extend parallel to the radial flange.

  • Publication number: 20100261953
Abstract: A prosthesis for addressing pelvic organ prolapse in females comprises a frame fabricated from a shape memory material that supports a thin, flexible sheet in a stretched condition when the frame is unconstrained. The frame is shaped so as to conform to and be supported by bone structures and muscle tissue in the pelvic basin while providing needed support to pelvic organs to maintain them in a proper position. The use of a shape memory material allows the prosthesis to be rolled or folded into a reduced size for ease of placement through a small incision in the wall of the vagina, but that springs back to its memorized shape following deployment from a delivery sheath.

  • Publication number: 20090270999
Abstract: In some embodiments, a method of repairing a hernia may include one or more of the following steps: (a) introducing a patch prosthesis into a patient, (b) positioning the patch prosthesis over the hernia, (c) removing a wire frame from the patch prosthesis and the patient, (d) wrapping the patch prosthesis, (e) allowing the patch prosthesis to unwrap, (f) removing a removable stitch coupling the wire frame and a prosthetic fabric, and (g) securing the prosthetic fabric to the patient.

  • Publication number: 20080306497
Abstract: A hernia repair patch (10) comprising a wire frame of a pair of overlapping v-shaped wire segments (12, 14) attached to a prosthetic fabric material (20). The vertices (18) of the v-shaped wire segments (12, 14) are disposed in opposite directions. The wire segments (12, 14) further include attached points (16) at free ends thereof. Said wire frame supporting the prosthetic fabric material may be formed of Nitinol or other suitable shape memory alloy.

  • Patent number: 5824082
Abstract: A prosthesis for use in hernia repair surgery having a preformed prosthetic fabric supported along its periphery by shape memory alloy wire having a transformation temperature corresponding to normal body temperature allowing the prosthesis to be tightly rolled into a cylindrical configuration for delivery through a laparoscopic instrument and which deploys to a predetermined shape as it warms up to body temperature.

  • Patent number: 3993403
Abstract: Protective, removable, flexible insulated sheaths are employed on heat-softened temples of eyeglasses during fitting of the glasses to the head of the wearer to prevent injury or discomfort to the wearer. The temples are allowed to cool and harden while held in position on the head.
