  • Patent number: 8909253
Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products for determining a location of a device based on location information are described. In some implementations, location assist information may be requested so as to determine a location of sufficient quality to satisfy a requesting application. Upon receiving the location assist information, empherides from one or more visible sources may be requested. The location assist information may be used to determine the location of the device until the device has received and decoded the empherides.

  • Publication number: 20090191897
Abstract: Methods, systems, apparatus, and computer program products are provided to harness massively distributed, but locally available location, application usage, device usage, network and overall Radio Frequency (RF) systems awareness, processing, memory and connectivity from mobile devices in a manner which would broadly characterize the environments these mobile devices operate within given the capabilities of each type of mobile device to contribute information about its local environment.

  • Publication number: 20090167599
Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products for providing an adaptive active location information gathering algorithm are described. Specifically, significant information density gains can be achieved by using an adaptive active location information gathering algorithm. The adaptive algorithm may select a compression and decompression encoding appropriate to deliver maximum information density while being adjusted automatically to accommodate variations including velocity and duration changes within a defined reporting period to ensure versatility and maximum efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7250874
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting data from a utility meter, such as a power meter, is disclosed. A microprocessor housed inside the power meter obtains readings of various power indicia, stores the readings in memory, and determines an efficient means of formatting the data for transmission to a remote host computer for further processing and use. The data is selectively compressed to minimize the amount and size of data that needs to be transmitted. The microprocessor is mounted on a circuit board assembly within the power meter housing and interfaces between the meter board of the power meter and a transmitter. The transmitter communicates the formatted and potentially compressed data from the power meter to the remote host computer wirelessly or via hard-wired communication lines. The various power indicia include power usage or power quality information.

  • Patent number: 6946972
Abstract: A method for wirelessly transmitting data from an utility meter, such as an electric meter, is disclosed. A microprocessor housed inside an energy meter obtains readings of various power indicia, stores the readings, processes the buffer to determine an efficient means of formatting the data for transmission using a radio frequency communications link. The method examines the plurality of readings and determines if values can be communicated by transmitting an initial reading and followed by the difference of the next reading from the previous reading. A special indication is transmitted to turn ‘on’ compression and allow the receiver to propertly interpret received data. Other indicators are transmitted to turn ‘off’ compression, turn on compression for a pre-defined limited duration, or vary the range of the difference between readings.

  • Publication number: 20020041238
Abstract: A remote monitoring system uses a bi-directional pager communications system for monitoring remote monitoring stations. Each remote station includes monitoring hardware, data storage for recording data collected by the monitor and a pager for transmitting the data to a user through a commercial pager system. The pager also receives control signals from the user. The remote station may include control devices for altering the monitoring process or varying other operating parameters. As a data communications system, the bi-directional pager or digital cellular PCS modem can be mated to most any monitoring device. This allows for inexpensive monitoring because the need for frequent visits to the remote site is eliminated. Where a monitored site is not within an area covered by a host pager service, a mobile pager host is used as an intermediary for collecting monitoring data and delivering control data.
