    Abstract: An easy-open package for food items, such as sausages, and a packaged sausage product that is hermetically sealed within a cavity. The package includes first and second sheets. The first sheet defines a cavity for holding sausages. The second sheet is applied onto the first sheet to cover the cavity and the sausages. A radiant seal seals the sausages within the cavity. A peel seal surrounds the radiant seal. In packages having a reclosable seal, one or more unsealed pockets are defined between the peel seal and a bottom of the reclosable seal, such as interlocking grooves or a zipper. The radiant and peel seals define an unsealed area. The one or more unsealed pockets and the unsealed area make it easier to open the package, by requiring less force to separate the first and second sheets. Further, the unsealed area can provide an area in which purge from the sausages is collected so that the purge is not dispersed throughout the package, thus providing a more visually appealing package.

    Abstract: An oxygen scavenging material (e.g., ferrous metal and inorganic salt compound disk, powder, or pellets) is, placed in a plastic fitment assembly, which then is applied, for example, by heat to the sealant side of film, while on a horizontal or vertical pouch forming equipment. The fitment is designed to hold the disk or pellets in place using a porous film and/or the fitment itself. The inside fitment is snapped into the outside fitment, now called the fitment assembly. The fitment assembly is sealed using the outer fitment to the packaging film material. The porous film allows the oxygen to be absorbed by the ferrous and salt compound (disk, powder, or pellets). The plastic fitment assembly is applied to the headspace area of the package and sealed into place. The fitment assembly is in the headspace area, which is the ideal location for oxygen absorption.

The base and sidewall define an interior cavity. The free edge defines a tray opening. The base has a raised button extending into the cavity. A sleeve surrounds the tray. The sleeve includes a front panel having a display surface and is disposed adjacent to the tray opening and a rear panel disposed adjacent to the base. The sleeve adjacent to the base extends outwardly to form a leg upon which the sleeve and tray can be upstandingly placed. The tray is adapted to receive food pouches within the cavity. The raised button stabilizes the center of gravity of the food packaging system when the food packaging system is placed in an upstanding position on the leg. Advantageously, at least one food pouch disposed in the cavity.
