Patent number: 8888857Abstract: A constrained prosthetic knee having a modular hinge post and a rotating bearing. A cannulated hinge post is rotatably connected to the femoral component of the knee prosthesis so that a hinge post extension may be anteriorly positioned through the hinge post and into the tibial component of the knee prosthesis, after positioning of the femoral component in the femur and the tibial component in the tibia. The hinge post is preassembled to the femoral component so that such assembly is not required during the implantation procedure. A meniscal component forming the rotating bearing of the knee prosthesis is packaged together with the hinge post extension so that the appropriate hinge post extension is readily available. The meniscal component includes a mechanism for preventing lift off of the meniscal component from the tibial component, while allowing rotation of the meniscal component relative to the tibial component.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2012Date of Patent: November 18, 2014Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: John E. Meyers, George D. Letson, Russell Windsor, Vincent A. Webster, Bill N. Sisk, Bill H. Haywood, Adam M. Griner, Michael Cook, Rodney L. Bays, Jerry L. Aikins, Marvin Figueroa, Peter S. Walker

Patent number: 5904688Abstract: An orthopaedic assembly includes a first portion or an acetabular cup and a second connecting portion or a cup inserter. The acetabular cup includes a cavity for receiving a femoral head and a pole defining a longitudinal axis through the cavity. The acetabular cup further includes an annular face which bounds the cavity and has a plurality of notches extending therein. Each notch includes an undercut wall. The annular face further includes a projection receiving device. A cup inserter includes a body with an end face and a plurality of fingers extending from the end face. Each finger is insertable into a corresponding one of the notches in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis and is rotatable around the longitudinal axis to a locking position. Each finger includes a transverse surface which matingly engages with a corresponding one of the undercut walls when the finger is in the locking position. The cup inserter further includes a projection and a biasing device.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1997Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.Inventors: Stephen G. Gilbert, Rodney L. Bays, Billy N. Sisk, Richard A. Lane

Patent number: 5693048Abstract: The invention is directed to an intramedullary guide rod assembly for use in orthopaedic surgery for aligning one or more milling or cutting guides. A guide member is pivotally connected to an intramedullary guide rod intermediate the proximal and distal ends thereof. An alignment mechanism aligns the guide member to the intramedullary guide rod while a biased locking mechanism prevents alignment changes during application of impact forces.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1995Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Gregory C. Stalcup, Rodney L. Bays, Billie W. McBroom

Patent number: 5484446Abstract: The alignment guide of this invention includes a cam rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the alignment guide as defined by an intramedullary rod. A base plate is pivotally connected to the intramedullary rod and includes a pair of cam followers positioned on opposite sides of the intramedullary rod. In use, as the cam is rotated relative to the rod, the cam followers ride against the cam causing the plate to pivot or angulate relative to the rod. A plurality of indicia are formed on the cam to indicate to the surgeon the relative angle between the plate and the rod. The base plate includes a quick connect mechanism to permit the surgeon to quickly attach a device such as a cutting guide or pinning guide to the base plate. The cutting guide is fixed relative to the base plate such that the cutting guide will be at the same angular orientation as the plate relative to the intramedullary rod.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1994Date of Patent: January 16, 1996Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Dennis W. Burke, Thomas Petersen, David Krueger, Rodney L. Bays
