  • Patent number: 7771429
Abstract: Surgical tools and methods for inserting fasteners into a patient. The tools may be loaded to hold multiple fasteners at a single time. The tools may include an elongated shape for insertion into the patient and placement at a predetermined position. A dispensing mechanism within the tools individually releases the fasteners. The tools may further be equipped to completely or partially mount the fasteners within the patient. Methods of using the tools include preloading chambers with multiple fasteners prior to the surgical procedure. The fasteners may then be individually released from the tools during the surgical procedure and carefully positioned within the patient.

  • Publication number: 20090182384
Abstract: The present application is directed to embodiments of a pedicle screw assembly to position an elongated member within a patient. The assembly may include a receiver with a channel sized to receive the elongated member and a chamber. The assembly may also include an anchor with a head sized to fit within the chamber. The assembly may include a compression member sized to fit within the chamber and include a first side that contacts against the head and a second side that contacts against the receiver. At least one of the receiver, anchor, and compression member may be constructed of a first material, and at least one of the receiver, anchor, and compression member may be constructed of a second material. The first and second materials may include different moduli of elasticity to prevent deformation of the assembly.

  • Publication number: 20080249570
Abstract: Coupling assemblies and systems and methods are provided with an anchor member movably coupled with a receiver member extending along a receiver axis. A seat member is movable in the receiver member to assume any one of a plurality of orientations corresponding to an orientation of a connecting element extending through the receiver member transversely to the receiver axis.

  • Publication number: 20080243175
Abstract: A surgical gripping tool includes a dual-linkage, force multiplying coupling that increases the force applied to surgical rods for a given force applied to the tool handles. In some embodiments, recesses in the tool that grip surgical rods have complex surfaces comprising multiple radii, allowing the tool to securely grip surgical rods of different diameters. The recess radii may be undersized relative to the associated rod size. In one embodiment, the coupling multiplies an applied force by a factor of over 20.

  • Publication number: 20080147121
Abstract: The present application is directed to multi-axial screw assemblies to connect a longitudinal member to a vertebral member. In one embodiment, the multi-axial screw assembly includes a screw comprising a threaded shank and an enlarged head. The assembly may also include a body with an upper channel sized to receive the longitudinal member, a lower chamber to receive the head. The body is constructed to maintain the head in the lower chamber.

  • Publication number: 20080140086
Abstract: Instruments and methods are provided for delivering multiple implants to multiple implant locations in a patient without requiring a second implant to be loaded onto or engaged to the delivery instrument after delivery of a first implant. The implants can be sequentially engaged, using the delivery instrument, to the patient or to receptacles of one or more receiving members secured to the patient.

  • Publication number: 20070233078
Abstract: A pivoting connector couples a vertebral member to a longitudinal member. An anchor is pivotally attached to a body by positioning a head of the anchor within a cavity in the body. A longitudinal rod is inserted into a channel also positioned within the body and axially aligned with the cavity. A retainer applies a force to maintain the longitudinal rod within the channel, however the force may be isolated from the anchor. One embodiment may include a compression member that is separate from or integral with the body. The compression member may transmit a rod securing force to the anchor to secure or limit the pivoting movement of the anchor member relative to the body. The compression member may deflect or detach under the influence of the securing force.
