  • Patent number: 5087783
Abstract: An improved process for the alkylation of benzene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst. The catalyst bed may be caused to move in a direction countercurrent to the movement of the benzene and olefin, or a portion of the catalyst bed is periodically removed and replaced. A regeneration step, whereby the catalyst is heated in a controlled oxygen atmosphere in order to reactivate the catalyst, is also described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 9, 1990
Date of Patent: February 11, 1992
    Assignee: Lummus Crest, Inc.
Inventors: Roger C. Johnson, Daniel McCarthy, Andrei Rhoe
  • Patent number: 5003119
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of alkylbenzenes wherein a feed of fresh and recycle benzene and fresh olefin are reacted in the presence of an alkylation catalyst in an alkylator having at least two reaction stages wherein each stage is adiabatic. Essentially all of the olefin is completely reacted in each stage of the alkylator. Fresh olefin is fed into each stage of the alkylator. Preferred alkylbenzenes which are produced by this process are ethylbenzene and cumene.

  • Patent number: 4493138
Abstract: Vapor cooled induction apparatus having a winding with predetermined surface irregularities on the turn surfaces of the winding to provide spaces to permit a cooling/insulating vaporizable liquid dielectric to flow between the turn surfaces of the winding to enable a film of the insulating cooling detection to be deposited on the surface area of the winding. The surface irregularities may be transverse grooves disposed at predetermined intervals in at least one surface of an elongated metallic conductor used to form the winding or they may be bosses of insulation disposed on a predetermined spacing on at least one surface of the elongated metallic conductor. Also disclosed are a method and apparatus for forming precisely spaced grooves in the surface of a continuously moving elongated conductor and thereafter insulating the grooved conductor with a uniform, solid, homogeneous coating of electrical insulation.

  • Patent number: 4385964
Abstract: A method is disclosed for preventing the condensation of aluminum chloride (AlCl.sub.3) in a fractional distillation column which is operated to separate a fraction which does not include AlCl.sub.3 from a mixture containing AlCl.sub.3 and other metal chlorides and which is operated at temperatures which include the sublimation or melting points of AlCl.sub.3 at the operating pressure of the column. According to this method, titanium tetrachloride (TiCl.sub.4) is maintained in the column in an amount at least as great, by weight, as the amount of AlCl.sub.3 contained in the mixture.
