  • Patent number: 8823199
Abstract: A fluid turbine comprises a rotor rotatable in use about an axis transverse to the direction of fluid flow. The rotor has a first part carrying a plurality of arcuate blades and a second part journalled in a base structure by means of two or more bearings. All the bearings are arranged on the same side of the blades so that the first part of the rotor is cantilever supported in the base structure.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20060137286
Abstract: An anchor for use with structural joints including a body having a substantially uniform cross section, a first end and a second end, the body having at least one aperture formed between the first end and the second end and at least one opening formed adjacent the second end. The body has an embedding portion including the at least one aperture and a protruding portion including the at least one opening. Each aperture receives a first reinforcing member and each opening receives a second reinforcing member. The embedding portion is embedded in a first structural component, the protruding portion protruding exterior of the first structural component. The protruding portion and second reinforcing member are embedded in a second structural component adjacent the first structural component that forms a joint between the first and second structural components.

  • Patent number: 5415385
Abstract: Groups of differently printed advertising inserts are collated into stacks of at least two inserts each, and the stacks are advanced along a main predetermined path for feeding to a host machine having continuously moving pockets which contain newspaper jackets and which receive the collated stacks of inserts in order to marry the inserts and the jackets. Initially, at least two relatively tall stacked bundles of inserts are located above and are spaced laterally from the main path. Inserts are stripped from the tall bundles, are advanced laterally toward the main path and are stacked in two relatively short queues located above and spaced along the path. A first vacuum belt strips inserts from the upstream queue and advances such inserts in an upstream direction as a running shingle, which then reverses directions and proceeds downstream. As an incident thereto, successive leading inserts are stripped from the shingle and are advanced in spaced relation along the main path toward the host machine.

  • Patent number: 5068533
Abstract: A sample manifold and method of its use has been developed so that milligram quantities of mercury can be analyzed mass spectroscopically to determine the .sup.196 Hg concentration to less than 0.02 atomic percent. Using natural mercury as a standard, accuracy of .+-.0.002 atomic percent can be obtained. The mass spectrometer preferably used is a commercially available GC/MS manufactured by Hewlett Packard. A novel sample manifold is contained within an oven allowing flow rate control of Hg into the MS. Another part of the manifold connects to an auxiliary pumping system which facilitates rapid clean up of residual Hg in the manifold. Sample cycle time is about 1 hour.

  • Patent number: 5026548
Abstract: A surfactant for use as a viscosity reducing agent in chocolate, or an emulsifier, surfactant or foam stabilizer in the food and other industries is produced by extracting oats using an alcohol such as ethanol or propanol, extracting the alcohol extract with methanol and evaporating the methanol. The alcohol extraction may be preceded by extraction with a non-polar solvent such as hexane. A water-soluble surfactant can be produced by extracting the methanol extract with acetone and recovering the acetone-insoluble material.
