Patent number: 9476644Abstract: In accordance with one aspect of an exemplary embodiment, a furnace including a charge well is provided. The charge well comprises an open top chamber including side and base walls of a heat resistant material. An inlet is provided in a side wall of the chamber for receiving molten metal. A ramp is provided adjacent the side wall and an inner wall forms a central cavity. The ramp is disposed between the inner wall and the side wall. The ramp is generally inclined from an intersection with the base wall to adjacent a top surface of the inner wall. The cavity is in fluid communication with an outlet. A passage in the inner wall provides fluid communication between the inlet and the cavity. The inlet and an outlet each receives a conduit and at least one of the conduits can include an elbow joint.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2012Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: PYROTEK INC.Inventors: Roger Howitt, Jim Grayson, Mark Bolton, Paul Bosworth

Patent number: 7691322Abstract: The invention provides an improved furnace structure and methods of melting material in furnaces, particularly aimed at reducing the start up time for such furnaces. The furnace (2) defines a container for the molten metal having a maximum depth of molten metal in that container during use. A flow generator (30) for the molten metal within the furnace is fed through a first conduit (32) and supplies material back to the furnace through a second conduit (36). The first conduit entrance is provided in the upper 60% of the maximum depth of the molten metal in the container and/or the second conduit exit is provided in the lower 25% of the maximum depth of the molten metal in the container. The flow generator may receive material preferentially from around the periphery of the container and/or direct material towards the centre of the container. The inlet and outlet to the flow generator may be angled downwards towards the container.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2007Date of Patent: April 6, 2010Assignee: EMP Technologies LimitedInventors: Alan Michael Peel, Roger Howitt

Publication number: 20070140868Abstract: A pump and a method of moving molten metal is provided in which a tube open at one end and closed at the other end cooperates with a secondary tube received within it, open at both ends, to pump metal from the open end of the tube down a space between the tube and secondary tube to the closed end of the tube and then return the metal up the centre of the secondary tube. A simpler way of providing circulation of molten metal is provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2004Publication date: June 21, 2007Inventors: Alan Peel, Roger Howitt

Publication number: 20070108673Abstract: Processing apparatus and methods for introducing material into a molten metal are provided. The material is introduced through a tube, which leads into the molten metal flow between the exit from a chamber and the entry back into a chamber. Increased breaks for material injection and/or better material injection are provided as a result.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2004Publication date: May 17, 2007Applicant: EMP Technologies LimitedInventors: Alan Peel, Roger Howitt

Publication number: 20070057419Abstract: The invention provides apparatus and methods for discharging molten metal from a vessel based upon increasing the amount of molten metal moved into the vessel per unit time by a molten metal mover, such as a pump. This causes the level for at least part of the vessel to increase and so discharge through a discharge location. More reliable, safer to operate discharge of molten metal is provided as result.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2004Publication date: March 15, 2007Inventors: Alan Peel, Roger Howitt

Patent number: 5350440Abstract: A furnace (1) has a main holding (2) and a charging well (4) into which molten metal from the holding portion is circulated by means of an electromagnetic pump (7). Metal enters the well as a tangential flow and a stationary turbulator (10) is located in the path of the flow so as to upwardly and transversely deflect the flow. Resulting turbulence within the well enhances the rate of assimilation of solids into the melt without resulting in excessive oxidation. The method is suitable for melting aluminium swarf.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1993Date of Patent: September 27, 1994Assignee: Cookson Group PLCInventors: Anil Katyal, Warwick N. Brown, Roger Howitt
