  • Publication number: 20070292567
Abstract: Flexible retort packaging structures, including retort pouches and methods of making both the packaging structures and pouches, wherein an otherwise conventional flexible retort substrate is surface printed, the printed image is optionally overcoated with a protective overcoating material. The printing is accordingly located outwardly of the outer structural layer of the substrate and an overcoating is optionally applied over the printing, such that the printed image is between the optional overcoating and the outer-most structural layer of the substrate. The printed images and optional overcoating are simultaneously cured in an electron beam irradiation process.

  • Patent number: 6911242
Abstract: A flexible film for packaging articles such as food is provided. The film comprises a layer of polyvinylidene (“PVdC”) homopolymer, polyvinylidene and methyl acrylate (“PVdC-MA”) copolymer or other polyvinylidene chloride copolymer. A dienophile such as, for example, ethyl trans-cinnamate, methyl trans-cinnamate, dibutyl maleate, dimethyl maleate or maleic anhydride is blended with the PVdC polymer or PVdC-MA copolymer to reduce yellowing of the film caused by degradation of the PVdC or PVdC-MA through heat or electron beam irradiation. Preferably a range of about 0.05% and about 5% by weight of the dienophile is added to the PVdC or PVdC-MA.

  • Publication number: 20050106343
Abstract: Improved oxygen barrier and oxygen absorbing compositions and structures comprising blends of xylylene group-containing polyamides and cobalt octoate and xylylene group-containing polyamides, polyesters and cobalt octoate are disclosed and claimed. These blends have superior barrier properties and clarity obtained by controlling the degree of orientation and the amount of cobalt. These novel blends are used as single layers and as the core layer in multiple layer films, structures and articles. When used in multiple layer structures, the adjacent layers are comprised of polyesters and/or polyamides. The structures made from the blends of the present invention have a clarity that is superior to structures previously known in the art.

  • Patent number: 6709759
Abstract: The present invention relates to thermoplastic film structures having improved barrier and/or mechanical properties and methods for making the film structures. These improvements are achieved by incorporating into the thermoplastic film structures a polymeric nanocomposite comprising a polymer and nanosize particles of a modified clay.

  • Publication number: 20030235664
Abstract: Film structures, packages and methods of making the same are provided wherein the film structures have a desiccant material incorporated into a sealant layer of the films structures. More specifically, the film structure further includes a barrier material incorporated as an internal film layer within the film structure. The film structure is utilized for a package to hold a product that may be sensitive to the presence of moisture. The product may preferably be diagnostic test strips useful in the medical or pharmaceutical field.
