    Abstract: A data communications device includes a supervisory circuit, a power supply, and a power circuit. The power circuit includes a data communications port, a power supply connection coupled to the power supply, and a power controller coupled to the data communications port and the power supply connection. The power controller is configured to provide a power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port in response to communication with the supervisory circuit. Upon loss of communication with the supervisory circuit, the power controller is configured to selectively continue to provide the power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port when a local parameter has a first value, and discontinue providing the power signal from the power supply connection to the data communications port when the local parameter has a second value.

A network power system capable of delivering data terminal equipment power via a media dependent interface (MDI) includes power source equipment according to a first power via MDI scheme such as Cisco legacy power and at least one powered device according to a second power via MDI scheme such as IEEE standard power. A power compatibility module is inserted between the power source equipment and the powered device to enable the power source equipment to appear according to the first power via MDI scheme and the powered device to appear according the second power via MDI scheme. In one embodiment, the module includes switches, a DC/DC converter, an IEEE power source equipment circuit, and an isolator. The module may optionally include a user signaling device for communicating operating conditions of the module to a user.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus provide for determining whether a data terminal equipment (DTE) device represents a compatible device lacking an independent power supply and adapted to be powered using phantom power over a wired connection from a communications device such as a switch. A detection signal may be transmitted from the communications device to an identity network connected to the DTE. A response detection signal may be returned and checked in a receiver at the communications device. A switch may then be closed to provide phantom power if the result of the check indicates that the DTE is a compatible device adapted to receive phantom power. Compatible DTE device may include telephones, Voice over IP (VoIP, IP or Ethernet) telephones, network access devices, computers, and the like.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the length of a cable link in a computer network sends a test signal through the cable and examines how the signal is received. Measurements of the signal transit time, decrease in signal amplitude, and decrease in signal power are three techniques that may be used to measure cable lengths, individually or in combination. One or more transceivers are connected to the cable to send and receive the test signals, so that there is no need for access to the cable, except at the ends. Cable lengths may be calculated for both electrically conductive and fiber optic type cables. The length of an existing cable may be compared with a maximum length allowed by a particular data transfer protocol to verify compliance, or it may be compared against a previously stored value for purposes such as security checks to verify that the cable properties have not been altered as they might be if the cable were tapped, rerouted or extended.

    Abstract: A connection pin layout for connecting one or more integrated magnetics modules (IMMs) to a printed circuit board (PCB) for reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) includes grouping and locating the connection pins based on the signals passed through the connection pins and a method of routing traces to the connection pins. The connection pins carrying power between the PCB and the IMMs are located together and on the periphery of the connection pin layout. The traces to the power pins are routed to avoid passing under the data and ground connection pins or crossing the traces to the data and ground connection pins. When multiple IMMS are connected to a PCB, the connection pin layout coordinates the location of connection pins among IMMs and integrates the grouping of the connection pins for multiple IMMs.
