  • Patent number: 6109180
Abstract: A printing unit with a rotatable print cylinder and a rotatable blanket cylinder is provided. A tubular printing blanket is removably mounted on the blanket cylinder. The printing unit may have an imaging unit mounted therein. A printing member, which is mountable on the print cylinder, is imaged by the imaging unit inside the printing unit. The printing member has a continuous surface and may be removed axially from the print cylinder. The printing unit may be configured as a cantilever printing unit, or, alternatively, may be configured with both a gear side frame and a work side frame for supporting the print and blanket cylinders. In order to provide a variable-cutoff capability, a plurality of print cylinder saddles may be provided. Each print cylinder saddle has the same inner diameter for mounting on the print cylinders. However, in order to provide a variable cut-off, the print cylinder saddles may have a variety of outer diameters.

  • Patent number: 6093139
Abstract: The present invention is related to a product cutting device for flat material, such as sheets, webs of material or the like. A product folding cylinder rotates about an axis of rotation and has a surface for supporting the incoming material to be cut. A cutting cylinder cooperates with the product folding cylinder and has knife assemblies mounted thereon. Cyclically engageable product seizing elements are assigned to at least one of the product folding cylinder and the cutting cylinder, and are moveable opposite to a sense of rotation of the product folding cylinder. • Patent number: 5615878
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus, such as a folder apparatus of a web-fed printing press, having a printed product delivery with two fan wheel arrangements overlapping each other. An exemplary embodiment includes a mechanism for continuously conveying flat products. The mechanism has devices attached thereto in a timed arrangement for positioning each flat product to be delivered, in its entirety, off a centerline of the fan wheel arrangements prior to the entry of the flat product into a pocket of the fan wheel arrangements.

  • Patent number: 5607146
Abstract: A device for diverting signatures into pockets of at least two slow-down devices is provided. The device includes a set of high-speed tapes (3) arranged downstream of a pair of cutting cylinders (2). A set of diverting belts (6) comprises raised surface portions (6.3) and non-raised surface portions (6.4). The set of high-speed tapes (3) is assigned to the diverting belts (6) to ride on the raised and non-raised surface portions (6.3, 6.4) thereof, thus, periodically altering a signature conveying path (1) of signatures.

  • Patent number: 5363762
Abstract: A printing press including at least one impression cylinder, at least one plate cylinder, a pair of swivel arms corresponding to each plate cylinder and pivotal about a central axis of the plate cylinder, and a transfer cylinder corresponding to each plate cylinder and supported by the pair of swivel arms is disclosed. The swivel arms can be pivoted, so that each transfer cylinder can be moved between a printing position where the transfer cylinder is engaged with the running web and a non-printing position where the transfer cylinder is disengaged from the running web. The transfer cylinders of the present invention also can be commonly adjusted to vary the pressure against a running web.

  • Patent number: 5322270
Abstract: A folder delivery apparatus for single or multiple-stream production includes several delivery systems which are operable in parallel and can be driven independently of one another. During operation of the folder as well as during machine standstill, the delivery systems can be simultaneously shifted automatically or manually through adjustment units, in such a way that while adjustment takes place, the distance between the delivery systems can be set as desired within a minimal and a maximal setting position.

  • Patent number: 5249791
Abstract: In a fan delivery unit of a folder having a plurality of fan discs arranged next to one another on a motor shaft, the fan discs being formed with a plurality of fan blades having fan pockets therebetween, there is provided a device for braking printed products. The braking device includes driven brake shaft disposed parallel to the motor shaft, a plurality of brake rollers corresponding in number to the number of fan discs being mounted on the brake shaft, and a device for driving the brake shaft via the motor shaft selectively in one of two rotational directions. The brake rollers and leading edges of the fan blades are cooperative for delaying travel of a printed product introduced into the respective fan pockets.

  • Patent number: 5141221
Abstract: The invention relates to a deceleration device for folded products, with which folded products following one behind the other are gripped by decelerable transport devices (6, 7) and conveyed. The oppositely arranged transport devices (6, 7) tracing a path of motion (15) are driven by a planetary gearing (16). While planetary gears (21, 22) rotate around a sun gear (23), an instantaneous centre P1 describe a cardioid which, via drive brackets (17, 18 and respectively 55) causes the transport devices (6, 7) to take different speeds during rotation of the planetary gears (21, 22).

  • Patent number: 5029842
Abstract: A signature handling apparatus includes a first conveyor which sequentially moves signatures to a discharge station. At the discharge station, the signatures are sequentially transferred to a receiving conveyor. A corrugator assembly is located at the discharge station to stiffen the signatures by forming corrugations which extend between leading and trailing end portions of the signatures. Although the corrugations are only temporarily maintained in the signature, the corrugator assembly is close enough to the receiving conveyor so that a corrugation is maintained in a signature as a leading end portion of the signature moves to the receiving conveyor. Thus, the corrugator assembly is spaced from the receiving conveyor by a distance which is less than the distance between the leading and trailing end portions of the signatures.
