  • Patent number: 7621121
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for purifying exhaust gas in an internal combustion engine provided with an LNT and a particulate matter filter arranged in an exhaust gas conduit of the engine. The method includes de-sulfurization of the LNT and regeneration of the particulate matter filter.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 21, 2006
Date of Patent: November 24, 2009
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Filip Acke, Roger Tengblad, John Korsgren, Maria Karlsson
  • Patent number: 7225612
Abstract: The invention refers to a method and apparatus for converting NOx and comprises the step of controlling a temperature in a NOx-LNT by adsorbing NOx in the LNT at a temperature below a predetermined temperature value to a predetermined value being the maximum amount of NOx to be stored at the predetermined temperature value, thereafter heating the LNT to the predetermined temperature value, and thereafter starting a regeneration process by addition of reducing agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 25, 2005
Date of Patent: June 5, 2007
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Hans Bernler, Roger Tengblad, Filip Acke, Gisela Blomkvist

  • Patent number: 6354078
Abstract: The invention relates to a device and a method for reducing emissions in catalytic converter exhaust systems for a vehicle provided with a combustion engine. The invention comprises a control unit adapted to control the air-fuel being fed to the engine so that a high concentration of hydrogen is generated in the exhaust gas during start-up of the engine. Furthermore, secondary air is supplied downstream of the engine during cold starting thereof for foaming a gas mixture with the exhaust gas. This gas mixture is oxidized, so that heat energy generated by means of this oxidation is supplied to the catalyst, thereby providing a reduction of the light-off time of the catalyst.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 18, 2000
Date of Patent: March 12, 2002

  • Patent number: 5867982
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for reducing emissions in catalytic converter exhaust systems for an internal combustion engine. The invention comprises air-fuel mixture forming means for providing a mixture of air-fuel to the engine, a catalytic converter for purifying an exhaust gas mixture from the engine, and a control unit adapted for controlling the mixture forming means so that an excess of hydrogen is generated in the exhaust gas mixture during the start-up of the engine. According to the invention, the excess of hydrogen is maintained essentially unburnt within the catalytic converter so as to provide a short light-off time for the catalytic converter.
