Abstract: o-Hydroxyphenyl-s-triazines of the formula I in which n is 1 to 4 and R1 to R7 are as defined in claim 1, can be used, in combination with sterically hindered amines of the polyalkylpiperidine type, for stabilizing organic polymers. Some of these compounds are novel and can also be used without polyalkylpiperidine.

Abstract: Compositions comprising A) a polyolefin or polyolefin copolymer, and B) a compound of the formula I wherein R1 is O or O—X—O; R2, R3, R4 and R5 independently are hydrogen, halogen, C1-C8alkyl, C1-C8alkoxy, SR10, SO2R10, phenyl, CF3, COOR11; and wherein R2 and R3 also may be OH; R6 and R7 are H or C1-C8alkyl; R8 and R9 are H, C1-C8alkyl or allyl; R10 is phenyl or C1-C12alkyl; R11 is C1-C8alkyl; C3-C50alkylene interrupted by one or more O; cyclohexyl; benzyl; allyl; X is C2-C18alkylene; C3-C12hydroxyalkylene; or a group selected from those of the formulae where D and D′ independently are a direct bond or C1-C3alkylene; and Y is O, S, SO2, or C1-C3alkylene, e.g. polyethylene films, are well stabilized against the effects of light, oxygen and heat. Some novel compounds of component B are valuable stabilizers for organic material against damage by light, oxygen and/or heat.

Abstract: Industrial plant streams and processes that contain reactive light olefins such as isoprene and butadiene are plagued with fouling problems due to premature polymerization resulting in significant economic loss. A combination of phenylenediamines with nitroxides is found to be synergistic in its ability to prevent this premature polymerization of reactive light olefins.

Abstract: 1,2-Bis-adducts of stable hindered nitroxide compounds with substituted ethylenes are prepared by reacting two equivalents of nitroxyl compound with an ethylenically unsaturated compound such as styrene or an acrylate ester. These adducts are very effective inhibitors to prevent the premature polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers when such monomers are distilled, processed or stored.

Abstract: When a nitroxyl compound is heated in an oxygen-free atmosphere with a vinyl aromatic monomer at 50-140.degree. C. for up to 60 days, it forms an activated inhibitor mixture which is superior to the nitroxyl compound itself in preventing the premature polymerization of a vinyl aromatic monomer during its processing and purification.

Abstract: 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole UV-absorbers substituted at the 5-position of the benzo ring by a thioether group exhibit enhanced absorption in the near visible range (over 350 nm) allowing said compounds to be particularly effective in protecting polymer systems which are prone to degradation caused by actinic irradiation with wavelengths over 350 nm.

Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated carboxyl monomers, such as acrylic or methacrylic acid or their esters, are protected from premature polymerization during manufacture and storage in the presence or absence of water by the incorporation therein of an effective stabilizing amount of a blend two or more nitroxides. Some of these blends provide synergistic stabilization efficacy much superior to the stabilization results obtained by use of either nitroxide alone.

Abstract: Nitroxyl inhibitors in combination with some oxygen reduce the premature polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers during the manufacturing processes for such monomers. Even small quantities of air used in combination with the nitroxyl inhibitors result in vastly prolonged inhibition times for said monomers.
