  • Patent number: 6457742
Abstract: A side impact protection system for vehicles comprises an inflatable gas bag (10) which has a wall made of a material being impermeable to gas, and a gas source (3) for inflating the gas bag. For reducing peak loads upon diving of the occupant into the inflated gas bag there are provided several burst chambers (12, 14, 16) separated in their contour shape from the inflatable volume of the gas bag (10) by retaining means (18). The retaining means (18) of the burst chambers (12, 14, 16) are dimensioned as regards their strength such that the burst chambers (12, 14, 16) is opened towards the inflatable volume of the gas bag (10) once a predetermined value of the gas bag internal pressure, which is lower than the filling pressure of the filling gases provided by the gas source (3), has been attained.

  • Patent number: 6435544
Abstract: In an occupant restraint system for a vehicle that has a body structure which is covered internally by a lining, an inflatable gas bag is packed in a casing. The lining is provided with a recess. The casing extends along an edge of the recess and is in snug contact therewith. The casing is exposed or at the most is covered by a decorative cover foil or cover sheet. The major part of the casing is not covered by the lining. The casing may be demarcated evidently from the lining by design elements.

  • Patent number: 6378895
Abstract: An inflatable protective cushion (10) for the protection of vehicle occupants against side impact, in particular in the head and shoulder region, comprises a gas inlet pipe (18). The gas inlet pipe extends over a substantial portion of the extent of the protective cushion (10). A branch line (24) is directed from the gas inlet pipe (18) inside the protective cushion (10) to a region of the protective cushion (10) a distance away from the gas inlet pipe (18), whereby selected portions of the cushion can be inflated more rapidly.

  • Patent number: 6199896
Abstract: A gas bag module for a vehicle occupant restraint system comprises an elongated housing which consists of two side pieces and in which a flow channel for compressed gas is provided, a gas bag which can be transferred by the compressed gas from a folded position into an unfolded position and which is accommodated in the housing in its unfolded position, and a closure plate constructed in one piece with one of the side pieces. The flow channel is formed by the side pieces of the housing and by the closure plate. The closure plate has passages for the compressed gas. Further, a method or producing a gas bag module is provided wherein the flow channel is formed by bending a cast or injection molded plastic housing.

  • Patent number: 6183004
Abstract: A gas bag covering arrangement comprises a gas bag covering for covering an unfolding opening in a vehicle and a device for detachably fastening at least one part of the gas bag covering to the vehicle. The device has at least one holding section and the gas bag covering has a portion which covers the gas bag unfolding opening and which has an edge on which the holding section engages. The device is so flexible that the gas bag covering can move out from its mounting formed by the holding section when the gas bag unfolding opening is exposed. The device further comprises a tear-open section and a mounting section, the tear-open section being destroyed on exposure of the gas bag unfolding opening and on displacement of the holding section such that the flexibility of the device being increased. The holding section remains secured to the device by the mounting section after destruction of the tear-open section.
