  • Patent number: 4857297
Abstract: H.sub.2 S is directly oxidized to elemental sulfur by contacting an H.sub.2 S containing gas stream having a water content less than 10% by volume with air or oxygen over a catalyst containing at least 80 wt % titanium dioxide. Most of the H.sub.2 S in the gas is oxidized to elemental sulfur. The process is especially useful for recovery of additional sulfur from effluent gas from a Claus unit.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 9, 1987
Date of Patent: August 15, 1989
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Roland Kettner, Norbert Liermann, Torsten Lubcke
  • Patent number: 4552746
Abstract: A process for the reduction of sulfur content in gas streams with production of elemental sulfur wherein the sulfur-containing gas is thermally treated, in the presence of oxygen, with a catalyst consisting essentially of titanium oxide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 21, 1982
Date of Patent: November 12, 1985
Inventors: Roland Kettner, Norbert Liermann, Torsten Lubcke
  • Patent number: 4322307
Abstract: Process for treating a well penetrating a subterranean formation which is productive of sour gas in order to alleviate sulfur deposition. An alkyl naphthalene base sulfur solvent is circulated into the well and recovered from the well in admixture with the produced gas. The injected solvent comprises an alkyl naphthalene mixture containing C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl naphthalenes in an amount within the range of 70-90 weight percent and higher-boiling naphthalenes in an amount within the range of 5-15 weight percent. The sulfur solvent contains no more than a 10 weight percent of naphthalene and has an initial boiling point of at least 230.degree. C., a flash point greater than 101.degree. C., and a freezing point of less than 0.degree. C. The solvent mixture may be dissolved in a carrier oil for introduction into the well.
