    Abstract: A fuel system is disclosed having a fuel nozzle which receives pulsed, pressurized fuel for injection into the intake of an engine. The nozzle has a valve seat assembly with an upstream and a downstream seat interconnected by a longitudinal passage and by a bypass extending from upstream of the first seat to a location intermediate of the two seats. A poppet valve assembly has interconnected upstream and a downstream valve members operable relative to respective valve seats to regulate flow through the nozzle. A biasing member urges the valve member into a closed position in which the upstream valve member is unseated and the downstream valve member is seated to interrupt flow therethrough and out of the nozzle. Introduction of a fuel pulse into the nozzle moves the upstream valve member into engagement with its valve seat to thereby unseat the downstream valve member to allow fuel flow through the bypass around the upstream valve/seat and out of the nozzle through the open, downstream valve/seat.

    Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle has a tubular body adapted to receive fuel, a tubular seat member mounted to the body, the seat member having an opening for discharging fuel and a valve seat surrounding the opening, a poppet valve member engageable with the valve seat to interrupt fuel flow through the opening, and an extension spring anchored to the body and to the valve member and biasing the valve member to engage the valve seat. The extension spring is a helically coiled spring with each coil lying close to the adjacent coils and with the coils at one end overlying an end of the body to anchor the spring to the body and to cause fuel flowing through the nozzle to pass between the coils of the spring; the spring thereby acts as a filter for fuel to be discharged by the nozzle. The seat member is axially movable relative to the body to adjust the length of the spring and thus the bias on the valve member whereby the desired valve-opening pressure differential may be established.

    Abstract: An injector has a single tapered valve controlling fuel flow to a plurality of outlet passages. The entrance to each outlet passage has an orifice surrounded by a raised valve seat. Each valve seat is separated from the other valve seats by a recessed space. The valve pivots as it is displaced from the valve seat to allow fuel flow through the outlet passages, and is constrained against other motion within the injector. The valve seats are clustered beneath the free end of the valve. The orifices are sized to compensate for the unequal lift of the tapered valve from the valve seats.

    Abstract: A carburetor controlled by a pulse width modulated duty cycle operated solenoid has a main metering rod and an idle bleed valve spring biased against a bracket carried by the solenoid armature. The armature is spring biased to a rich position against an adjustable stop and is pulled by the solenoid coil to a lean position against a portion of the solenoid coil assembly. The entire coil assembly is spring biased against a stop which is adjusted to establish the lean position of the metering rod and bleed valve.

    Abstract: In a four-barrel carburetor, a pair of plain tube primary mixture conduits each has a main well receiving fuel through a main jet controlled by a metering rod which is positioned by a vacuum responsive piston. An auxiliary fuel passage receives fuel both through an auxiliary jet controlled by a metering rod positioned by a vacuum responsive piston and through a supplementary jet controlled by a metering rod positioned by an ambient pressure responsive bellows. A pair of transfer passages respectively connect the auxiliary fuel passage to the main wells.

    Abstract: In a carburetor having a two-stage power valve and an off-idle air bleed, a lean air-fuel mixture may be supplied when it is desirable to operate in a lean mode for optimizing an exhaust gas oxidizing reactor while a rich air-fuel mixture may be provided when it is desirable to operate in a rich mode for optimizing an exhaust gas reducing converter. In the rich mode means comprising a selectively energizable solenoid control closes the off-idle air bleed and opens the first stage of the power valve thereby enriching both off-idle and open throttle air-fuel mixtures. The power valve is also operated by an induction pressure responsive piston, and at high induction pressures both stages may be opened during lean mode operation and the second stage may be opened during rich mode operation for wide open throttle enrichment.
