  • Patent number: 4846614
Abstract: A fastening apparatus is provided wherein the length of a mating threaded connection between two members is limited as a function of an effective differential pitch to the uniform pitch of the threads on both members whereby clearances of progressive increasing amounts are established between successive opposed tooth flanks. An elastic deformation of one member occurring in a direction opposite to the increasing of the amounts of clearance brings successive opposed flank portions into a force transmitting relationship whereby the total area of flank-to-flank contact between the threads varies as a function of the applied load.

  • Patent number: 4622730
Abstract: A plurality of jack bolts are threadedly engaged with openings in a flange on a fastener to stress a shank part of the fastener. The flange can be a collar retained on a shaft by a retainer, a nut on a threaded end of a bolt or the head portion of a bolt. The jack bolts can be arranged in a flange on an end of the tension rod to stress arbors against opposite sides of a roll sleeve to form a roll assembly for use in a rolling mill.

  • Patent number: 4307594
Abstract: A workpiece issuing from a rolling mill is directed by a tubular guide to pass above the knives of a flying shear that is driven in a drive train used to rotate a cam used to pivot the guide tube and direct the workpiece into the shear. The workpiece moves beyond the shear into one of a plurality of retardation channels formed in a drum. There may be shock absorbers at their remote ends to prevent escapement of the sheared workpieces in the event they fail to stop by sliding friction. The drum rotates at a relatively slow speed. When a trailing end of a sheared workpiece moves beyond the shear into the drum, the leading end of the remaining length of workpiece enters a laterally-adjacent channel which has moved into the path of travel by the workpiece through rotation of the drum. A conveyor receives workpieces discharged from the drum through rotation thereof and carries them to a remote discharge station where they are loaded into a cradle car.

  • Patent number: 4104995
Abstract: A diesel, gasoline or gas internal combustion engine adapted for operation on a two-cycle or four-cycle basis includes apparatus to vary the compression ratio of gases during operation of the engine. Two pistons, connected to separate crankshafts, communicate with each other in a single internal combustion chamber. One piston is reciprocated by a crankshaft in one cylinder portion to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy. The displacement of the one piston defines a fixed compression ratio and the displacement of a second piston by a second crankshaft in the other cylinder portion operates in the combustion chamber to a second fixed compression ratio. The two crankshafts are coupled together through timing means used to change the relative rotational phase relation between the crankshafts whereby a net compression ratio is formed as components of the compression ratios of both pistons.

  • Patent number: 3945234
Abstract: Alternative tandem arrangements of rolling mill stands are formed by supporting a plurality of separate and independently operable rolling mill stand assemblies upon one or more pedestals extending along a given passline. In one disclosed embodiment, a single pedestal extends along the passline and includes an angularly-shaped plate extending parallel to the passline and including inclined surfaces for carrying rolling mill assemblies at spaced locations. Auxiliary adapter pedestals are disclosed to position a rolling mill stand such that the rotational axes of its rolls are inclined in a different relation to the horizontal than when the mill stand is supported directly by the angularly-shaped plate on the pedestal. In a second embodiment, a plurality of side-by-side pedestals extend along a passline. Each pedestal defines a separate rolling mill support surface with the support surfaces of adjacent pedestals lying in intersecting support planes. An improved rolling mill stand assembly is disclosed.
