  • Patent number: 9546597
Abstract: A turbocharger for an internal combustion engine includes a rotating assembly having a turbine wheel disposed inside a turbine housing and a compressor wheel disposed inside a compressor cover. The turbocharger also includes a waste-gate assembly configured to selectively redirect at least a portion of the engine's post-combustion gases away from the turbine wheel. The waste-gate assembly includes a valve, a rotatable shaft connected to the valve, and a bushing fixed relative to the turbine housing and disposed concentrically around the shaft such that the shaft rotates inside the bushing for opening and closing the valve. The bushing is defined by a length, an outer surface in contact with the turbine housing, and an inner surface in contact with the shaft. The inner surface includes a plurality of longitudinal grooves configured to counteract friction between the bushing and the shaft and avoid seizure of the shaft relative to the bushing.

  • Patent number: 8235685
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are directed towards an apparatus and method for fluidly coupling a turbocharger to an internal combustion engine. In one embodiment, a turbocharger mount for fluidly coupling a turbocharger to an exhaust system of an engine is provided. The turbocharger mount includes a housing portion and a mounting flange extending from the housing portion. The housing portion defines a cavity therein and a first inlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity, a first outlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity, and a second outlet opening in fluid communication with the cavity.

  • Patent number: 8206133
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are directed towards a turbocharger for an internal combustion engine and more particularly an apparatus and method for fluidly coupling a turbocharger with an internal combustion engine. In one embodiment a turbocharger housing is provided. Turbocharger housing includes a turbine housing defining a volute chamber. The turbocharger housing also includes a first housing support extending from the turbine housing. The first housing support is integrally formed with the turbine housing and the first housing support defines an inlet opening and an outlet opening each of which are in fluid communication with the volute chamber.

  • Patent number: 7946781
Abstract: An assembly for connecting a component having a base to a surface includes a fastener and a retainer having a clamp portion for capturing a shank of the fastener, and for aligning the fastener and an optional gasket with the base. The retainer automatically separates from the fastener when the fastener is tightened, and may include a recovery feature to allow recovery of the retainer after separation. A method for facilitating connection of a component and gasket to a surface includes inserting a threaded fastener into a base of the component, capturing the fastener within a clamp portion of a retainer, and positioning a surface of the retainer adjacent to the base. A tab portion of a gasket or the base can be inserted into a slot in the retainer to thereby secure the retainer to the base prior to connecting the component to the surface.

  • Publication number: 20060137342
Abstract: A regulated two-stage turbocharger system is described. The turbocharger system includes high-pressure and low-pressure turbocharger units in communication with one another. The turbocharger system includes a valve system having valve members that are independently controllable so as to selectively control the gas flow into the turbine portions of the high-pressure turbocharger and the low-pressure turbocharger units. The valve members are asymmetric, e.g., they possess differing areas (e.g., perimeters, diameters and/or the like) with respect to one another.
