  • Patent number: 9128280
Abstract: A display apparatus includes an electrowetting display device with a first support plate, a second support plate and first and second fluids immiscible with each other in a space between the support plates. The first support plate has a display region comprising multiple display areas, each display area being associated with an electrode, the coverage of the first fluid over the display areas being independently controllable.

  • Publication number: 20140293395
Abstract: An electrowetting display device comprising at least one picture element including a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. A protrusion arranged through the second fluid and in contact with the first fluid provides a preferential initiation of motion of part of the first fluid in a first direction and a different part of the first fluid in a second direction.

  • Publication number: 20140218351
Abstract: A display apparatus includes an electrowetting display device having at least one picture element with a display area. The display area has an active area and a different, inactive area and a display controller controls a display effect of the picture element in a range between a dark state and a light state, with a three-phase line between a first fluid, a second fluid and a first support plate of the picture element being completely in the inactive area for a first applied voltage corresponding to the dark state.

  • Publication number: 20140211293
Abstract: Electrowetting apparatus including a compound comprising a plurality of colorant moieties and a linker. The plurality of colorant moieties includes a first colorant moiety having a first net dipole and a second colorant moiety having a second net dipole, wherein the plurality of colorant moieties are linked by and disposed around the linker so that the first net dipole and the second net dipole at least partially cancel each other.

  • Patent number: 7548363
Abstract: An optical element used, e.g., in an electrowetting display device having a number of pixels, is arranged in an array. Each optical element includes a cell filled with a polar conductive fluid, such as a water solution, and a non-polar fluid, such as an oil. The cell further includes first and second planar electrodes covered with first and second hydrophobic layers. By applying a voltage between the first fluid and alternately the first or second electrodes, the oil is forced to migrate between the first and second hydrophobic layers. Thus a bi-stable, energy efficient optical element is provided.

  • Patent number: 7359108
Abstract: An exemplary display device based on layer displacement having a perforated white substrate positioned close to a transparent substrate. Layer (fluid) displacement such as oil movement results in the (colored) oil film being pumped in a controlled manner above the white substrate. Fluids of three subtractive colors can be independently pumped to separate spaces. Based on the color strength of the used fluids good color rendition can be obtained for a flow channel thickness of less than 25 microns and therefore a total pixel thickness including the sub pixel reservoirs of less than 200 microns.
