Abstract: A dishwasher is provided which can determine whether a filtering device needs to be cleaned based on the time taken for a drain pump to discharge wash fluid from a sump. The dishwasher can make this determination without a manual examination of food waste collected in the filtering device. A related method of controlling the dishwasher based on such a determination is also provided.

The method of controlling a washing machine that calculates an amount of laundry housed within a drum rotating by a motor, the method includes: accelerating the drum from a first rotation speed to a second rotation speed by enabling the motor to apply torque to the drum in a predetermined direction and decelerating the drum from the second rotation speed to the first rotation speed by enabling the motor to apply torque to the drum in an opposite direction; and calculating the laundry amount from the sum of currents applied to the motor at the accelerating of the drum.

The dishwasher measures the amount of vibration caused by a drain pump, and terminates the operation of the drain pump if the amount of vibration measured exceeds a predefined vibration level. Thus, it is possible to precisely determine, during a drain operation, when a sump will be completely drained and thus prevent the drain pump from being driven any longer if no wash fluid remains in the sump. Therefore, it is possible to prevent excessive vibration and noise from being generated.

Thus, it is possible to reduce the time taken to heat the wash fluid in the sump to a target temperature, thus reducing the operating time of the dishwasher.
