  • Patent number: 7796656
Abstract: The invention describes the method and apparatus for enhanced efficiency in a laterally-coupled distributed feedback (LC-DFB) laser. In a device featuring the effective ridge design, lateral confinement of the guided optical modes is provided by a surface etched grating, which also serves as a DFB element of the laser. Coupling and quantum efficiency of such a LC-DFB laser both improve with an increase of the lateral mode order. In accordance with this invention, a dramatic enhancement of the laser efficiency is achievable by designing it to operate in one of the higher order modes, notably the first order mode, while all the other lateral modes, including the zero order mode, are suppressed through gain-loss discrimination.

  • Patent number: 7789220
Abstract: A skirt for a material transport system, eg conveyor belt (104), includes liner plates (111, 112) mounted on the conveyor side of body (200). Removal of certain plates (112) only requires access via the side of body (200) away from conveyor (104). To remove plate (112) requires removal of its support member (210) as well and so provides an aperture through which a workman can insert his hand to remove further plates (111, 112). Member (210) may be hel to body (200) using wedges inserted through eyes and this member (210) may be positioned with the aid of tabs and guides. Rubber dust seals are also provided which are clamped in place using plates and wedge arrangements. These seals must be removed prior to removal of liner plates (111, 112).

  • Patent number: 7792942
Abstract: Managing a network resource is disclosed. An indication that a resource assigned to a subscriber host by a resource allocating node is no longer to be used by the subscriber host is received at a node other than the subscriber host or the resource allocating node. A resource release communication is sent to the resource allocating node from said node other than the subscriber host or the resource allocating node. The resource release communication appears to the resource allocating node to originate from the subscriber host and indicates to the resource allocating node that the resource is no longer to be used by the subscriber host.

  • Patent number: 7790633
Abstract: A silicon dioxide-based dielectric layer is formed on a substrate surface by a sequential deposition/anneal technique. The deposited layer thickness is insufficient to prevent substantially complete penetration of annealing process agents into the layer and migration of water out of the layer. The dielectric layer is then annealed, ideally at a moderate temperature, to remove water and thereby fully densify the film. The deposition and anneal processes are then repeated until a desired dielectric film thickness is achieved.

  • Patent number: 7786392
Abstract: An improved pressure switch comprises a cover assembly, a pair of electrical terminals, a spring, a contact disk, a diaphragm and a banjo housing. The pair of electrical terminals can be partially covered by the cover assembly and the spring can be placed within the cover assembly. The contact disk can tightly be connected with the diaphragm and arranged on top of the spring. When the pressure exceeds a preset pressure level, the diaphragm can be deflected down onto the contact disk, which compresses the spring to contact the terminals. The terminals can be activated for energizing, for example, a hydraulic circuit if the contact disk contacts the terminals. Therefore, the disk can bias itself when the disk makes contact on the top of the terminals, which creates a movement of the disk to provide a self cleaning feature.

Control circuitry connects the battery, the solar panels and LED lights to control operations of the LED lights and charging of the at least one battery. A photocell is connected to the control circuitry where when ambient light falls below a predetermined level, the control circuitry activates the LED lights. Translucent lenses include a bore hole in a base for receiving one of the LED lights and reflective material on outside edges. Suction cups retain the apparatus on a window surface where, during day light hours, there is sufficient ambient light to charge the battery and, during night hours, the translucent lenses illuminate a desired area.

  • Publication number: 20100217817
Abstract: When a device is switched off, all messages for that device are stored in different distributed service centres. For example, the message from user A may be stored in SMSC A and a message from user B in SMSC B where both subscribers and respective SMSCs can even belong to different networks. When the device is switched on again it notifies its presence to the network (performed by the MSC indicating this to the HLR). As a result of this alert, different service centres that have messages pending for that device will be notified that the device has come on-line again (performed by the HLR notifying SMSC A and SMSC B). Instead of directly sending out all messages, as in the prior art, each service centre instead schedules the messages in an internal queue for delivery according to a local control scheme, which achieves synchronised delivery from multiple distributed SMSCs even though there is no centralised control.

  • Publication number: 20100218039
Abstract: Multiple Array Management Functions (AMFs) are connected to multiple redundancy groups over a storage area network (SAN), such as a fiber-channel based SAN. The multiple AMFs share management responsibility of the redundancy groups, each of which typically includes multiple resources spread over multiple disks. The AMFs provide concurrent access to the redundancy groups for associated host systems. When a host requests an AMF to perform an operation on a resource, the AMF synchronizes with the other AMFs sharing control of the redundancy group that includes the resource to be operated on, so as to obtain access to the resource. While performing the operation, the AMF send replication data and state information associated with the resource such that if the AMF fails, any of the other AMFs are able to complete the operation and maintain data reliability and coherency.
