Patent number: 11941116Abstract: An illustrative method includes determining that a total amount of read traffic and write traffic processed by a storage system during a time period exceeds a threshold; determining a first compressibility metric associated with the write traffic; determining a second compressibility metric associated with the read traffic; determining, based on a comparison of the first compressibility metric with the second compressibility metric, that the write traffic is less compressible than the read traffic; determining, based on the total amount of read traffic and write traffic exceeding the threshold and on the write traffic being less compressible than the read traffic, that the storage system is possibly being targeted by a security threat; and modifying, in response to the determining that the storage system is possibly being targeted by the security threat, a data protection parameter set for one or more recovery datasets generated by the storage system.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2023Date of Patent: March 26, 2024Assignee: Pure Storage, Inc.Inventors: Andrew Kutner, Ronald Karr, Andrew Miller, Patrick D. Patent number: 11941615Abstract: Method and apparatus for transmitting credentials to a transaction processing system, the credentials arranged in sets and a set including a unique identifier and verification data elements. Credentials are activated and are then available for use in at least one subsequent transaction. In the transaction, in response to receiving authorization from a user, the unique identifier and verification data elements from a set are transmitted to the transaction processing system for the user. The credentials are activated using an activation mode selected from at least a first activation mode and a second activation mode. In the first activation mode, additional user input for the verification data elements associated with the unique identifier is received from the user. In the second activation mode, the user is authenticated, and verification data elements are received via a data communications network are received from a trusted data processing system remote from the user.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2021Date of Patent: March 26, 2024Assignee: VISA EUROPE LIMITEDInventors: Paul Michael Carpenter, Jonathan Paul Sumpster, Andrew Paul Thompson, Christopher Ian Abrathat, Jonathan Rusca, Jean-Christophe Gilbert Lacour, Michael Ronald Philpotts

Patent number: 6560945Abstract: An apparatus for the attaching of shingles to a roof and especially to the hip, ridge, and barge rafter edge portions of a shingled roof. The device can provide both a mounting guide to aid the user to achieve an in-line installation of conventional roofing shingles as well as a user determined uniform rise of the shingles so mounted to achieve a desired visual depth or thickness to the roof. The device features an elongated base strap for mounting to the roof line and a plurality of shingle fasteners mounted to the base strap at distances optimal for the shingles being used. Use of adhesives and mechanical mounts for the attached shingle further aids in maintaining a secure mount of the attached shingles in high winds and inclement weather.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1999Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Inventor: Ronald Carpenter

Patent number: 6284094Abstract: A paper cord is formed using wet lap paper of about 8″ to 11″ in width which is twisted into a cord form of about ¼″ to ⅜″ diameter. The cord is used to bind bales of compressed used paper having a volume of about 100 cubic feet and a weight of about 1,200 pounds. The bales are transported to a recycling pulp mill and placed in pulp making vats where the cord is dissolved to release the paper from the bales and subsequently convert the paper and cord to pulp for production of new paper products.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2000Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Western Paper Wire, Inc.Inventors: Ronald Carpenter, Kathleen Carpenter, Colleen Barth, Shannon Russell

Patent number: 5845387Abstract: A vehicle body has multiple panels adhesively bonded in spaced relationship without direct contact therebetween, the vehicle body constructed by presenting discrete body panels into an assembled position with respect to a single base for application of an adhesive thereon to secure the body panels together. The body panels, which include a pair of body side panels, a roof outer panel, a roof inner panel, and an underbody, have mating flanges along the peripheries thereof angled at between approximately 5.degree. and 15.degree. from a line perpendicular to a surface from which the flanges extend so as to reduce adhesive wipe-off between mating surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1995Date of Patent: December 8, 1998Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Roy E. Bonnett, Ronald A. Carpenter

Patent number: 5154462Abstract: A cross member bumper beam and method of making it are disclosed. The cross member bumper beam is attached to the frame rails of a vehicle. The beam is made of first and second materials that are bonded together with an adhesive. The first step of the method is to form a cross member from the first material. The cross member has a channel shape, with at least one bent return first edge portion. The bent return first edge portion includes a latch portion. The second step of the method is to attach the cross member to the frame rails of the vehicle. The channel shape of the cross member is oriented generally away from the frame rails and exposes the bent first edge portion. The third step of the method is to form a bumper facebar from the second material. The bumper facebar also has a channel shape with at least one bent return second edge portion. The bent return second edge portion includes an attachment portion.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1991Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Ronald A. Carpenter

Patent number: 5139297Abstract: A bumper structure, for use with an internal frame structure of a vehicle which has a pair of longitudinally extending generally parallel rail members and a cross-beam member attached to and extending transversely of the rail members, including a face bar member which slidingly receives the cross-beam member and provides a cavity between the two members. Energy absorbing material resides within the cavity. Should the frontal portion of the face bar receive an impact load above a predetermined magnitude, the face bar will slide rearward toward the cross-bar member thereby compressing the energy absorbing material and absorbing the impact. Various alternative constructions are included which additionally preclude relative lateral movement of the bumper structure during compression of the bumper beam relative to the frame member, including providing the face bar member with a back-up plate rearward of the cross-beam member and which straddles the respective axially extending rail members.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventors: Ronald A. Carpenter, Jau-Ching L. Leu

Patent number: 4961603Abstract: A vehicle bumper system for a vehicle, having a vehicle body and a pair of longitudinally extending load bearing members, includes a bumper member extending between the pair of longitudinally extending load bearing members. A tension means extends between the pair of longitudinally extending load bearing members for preventing the application of outwardly directed lateral forces to the load bearing members. The curved bumper member and the tension means are directly, pivotally connected to the pair of longitudinally extending load bearing members at the same locations on the load bearing members, such that an impact force applied to the bumper member does not result in outwardly directed lateral forces being applied to the load bearing members, or such lateral forces are minimized. The curved bumper member and the tension means may be formed as a single unit or, alternatively, may be separate elements. The bumper member and the tension means may be made of metal or of a structural composite material.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1989Date of Patent: October 9, 1990Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Ronald A.
