  • Patent number: 5409262
Abstract: A safety system is provided which allows a vehicle to collapse upon impact, thus absorbing energy. The vehicle includes a front frame and a rear frame, which are slidably engageable with one another. Upon impact, the front and rear frames translate, thus compressing the overall length of the vehicle. Energy reducing mechanisms connected to the front and rear frames, and the vehicle chassis, absorb the impact energy. A seat tilting mechanism is connected to the rear frame, which allows the passenger seat to tilt rearwardly upon impact. A bag below the bottom seat cushions is inflatable, and thus provides a barrier to impact. The vehicle drive shaft is collapsible and thus does not hinder the translation of the front and rear frames. A hood deflector is actuated upon impact, and deflects the hood upward, acting as an additional barrier against objects entering the passenger compartment.

  • Patent number: 4093307
Abstract: A vehicle safety belt structure for use with a seat having a back, in which two laterally extending straps are attached to a body portion and extend around the passenger. The body portion is supported on the back of the vehicle seat and the straps are so positioned with respect to an adult passenger that they overlap the lower rib cage and the upper abdomen and give support to the body while restraining the passenger in the event of a sudden stop or accident. The two straps are preferably connected to one another around the body of the passenger by a Velcro fastener, and an upper portion attached to the body may be secured to the upper part of the back by a fixture which permanently holds the belt structure in place on the back of the set.

  • Patent number: 4090580
Abstract: A variable length anchoring device for vehicle seats having a forward and rearwardly adjustable seat portion, in which a hydraulic cylinder assembly is connected to the forward part of the seat portion and to an anchor means on the floor, or other suitable support rearwardly of the forward part of the seat. A deceleration responsive mechanism controls the hydraulic cylinder assembly so that the hydraulic assembly adjusts freely while the seat is being adjusted, but becomes a rigid member in an emergency, or during a sudden deceleration, resulting from the application of the vehicle brakes. In one embodiment, the opposite ends of the cylinder are connected by a conduit, and a valve connected to the brake system controls the flow of fluid through a conduit connecting one end of the cylinder to the other.
