  • Patent number: 7832249
Abstract: A can assembly includes a can body, and a cap that is seamed to the can body, and a bag. The bag, which may be formed by a thermoforming process, includes a thickened portion as part of a peripheral flange that terminates in a bulb. A throat that receives the bulb is formed by necks on the body and cap such that the bulb is spaced apart from the seam. A constriction formed by the neck radially inboard from the bulb receives the thickened portion of the bag. The process for forming the can assembly includes forming the seam and thermoforming a billet into the bag. At least part of the flange is formed between matched portions of mold flanges.

  • Publication number: 20040108627
Abstract: A system and method for making a specialized preform and for fabricating a container from the specialized preform includes a first preform molding assembly in which a preliminary preform is molded so as to have a first sidewall portion that is thicker than the surrounding sidewall areas. A final preform is molded from the primary preform in a second preform molding assembly, wherein fluid pressure is utilized to mold the thickened first sidewall portion into a lateral projection that corresponds and size in shape to a handle structure that is desired in the final container. The specialized final preform is then positioned within a container mold that is constructed to pinch the lateral projection during blowmolding of the final container so as to define an integral molded handle portion having a central sealed slug area that is later removed.

  • Publication number: 20040108295
Abstract: A retortable plastic container includes a finish portion and a main body portion that is unitary with the finish portion and that includes a sidewall having an inner surface that defines an interior space and an outer surface. The sidewall is preferably fabricated from a material comprising a plastic and is shaped so as to have at least one radially inwardly extending annular projection defined therein that provides reinforcement against radial expansion of the main body portion during the retort process. In addition, a transition portion between a main body of the container and the bottom of the container preferably includes at least one annular step that increases the rigidity of the bottom portion of the container.

  • Patent number: 5082136
Abstract: Difficulties in removing a film-like seal (14) from the access opening (12) of a container (10) may be avoided in a container and cap construction including a container (10) whose access opening (12) has an edge (20) of circular shape and of a particular inside diameter, a cap (16) for the opening (12), snap-fit components (28, 30) or threads (140, 142) for removably holding the cap (16) on the container (10) to occlude the access opening (12), a membrane or foil-like seal (14) bonded to the container (10) about the access opening (12) to be free of the cap (16) and at least one cutting tooth (50, 104) carried by the cap (16) and displaced from a rotation point (54) on the cap (16) about which the cap (16) may be rotated relative to the access opening (12) a distance equal to or slightly more than one-half of the particular diameter.

  • Patent number: 4954066
Abstract: A chain guide structure for guiding a conveyor chain through a thermoforming machine to protect the chain from plastic chips and other debris. The chain guide includes a support rail structure for supporting an upper run of conveyor chain, and a spring steel cover sheet overlying a track defined by the support rail and in close proximity with the chain to serve as a cover and thereby protect the chain from contamination from foreign material. Additionally, the chain includes a series of spikes to penetrate a plastic sheet and thereby carry it through the machine, wherein the chain guide structure has a width sufficient to permit lateral outward expansion of the plastic sheet as it is heated in the thermoforming machine. An upwardly inclined portion of the guide structure provides a cooling section to permit the plastic sheet to cool as it is carried away from a forming section of the machine.
