  • Patent number: 4686777
Abstract: A vacuum device (15, 15') and method for avoiding sheet flutter in an on-running tangent pocket (14, 14') defined between the perimeter of a dryer roll (9, 9'), and a free transitional span (13, 13') of a dryer felt (7, 7') travelling toward the dryer roll and carrying a wet paper sheet web (8, 8') on the face of the felt outside of the tangent pocket. The device comprises an elongate hollow manifold (17, 17') arranged to extend longitudinally within the pocket (14, 14') parallel to the felt (7, 7') and web (8, 8'). The air in the pocket (14, 14') is vacuumed into a chamber (16, 16') within the manifold (17, 17') through an arrangement of ports (21, 21', 22, 22') communicating with the vacuum chamber. A suction member (20, 20') draws the air from the vacuum chamber (16, 16') and communicates with a vacuum source (34).

  • Patent number: 4498249
Abstract: A mechanism for drying a traveling web such as employing a steam heated dryer drum in a papermaking machine with the drum being supported on end bearings in journals in a frame and a rigid condensate removal tube extending through one of the journals with its inner end adjacent the inner surface of the drum and the drum having a rotary steam seal through which the tube passes with a pivotal mount for the rigid tube and a micrometer adjustment which adjusts the pivotal position of the tube so that the inner end of the tube being cantileverly supported can be adjusted accurately relative to the inner surface of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4384412
Abstract: A steam heated dryer drum for use in a papermaking machine with the drum including a cylindrical rotary hollow drum shell and a structure for removing condensate from the steam from the shell including a conduit leading from inside to outside the shell and an improved structure for receiving the condensate with a siphon tip having a hollow chamber within and an opening facing the inner surface of the dryer shell and closely spaced thereto and a flange at the lead end of the siphon tip with an inclined ram surface and a wall across the center of the chamber in engagement with the inner surface of the shell.

  • Patent number: 4361466
Abstract: A method and mechanism for dewatering a web in a paper making machine having press means, a first thermal dryer section having a long continuous support looped belt carrying the web along a first drying run with rolls and suction zones beneath the web and a hot air generating means for directing a flow of air onto the web in the first thermal run with the web being received substantially 40% bone dry at the beginning of the first thermal run and being delivered substantially 50% bone dry at the end of the run onto a heated drum dryer section.
