Patent number: 5910906Abstract: The invention is a method for performing tone detection on a digital signal processor (DSP) that may be used in the presence of tone aliases caused by inadequate anti-aliasing filtering. The method involves processing an input signal at different sampling rates, and can be used with any tone detection algorithm. A tone is detected when it is present at each of the sampling rates. The method allows tone detection to be performed without the use of a proper anti-aliasing filter.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1996Date of Patent: June 8, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventor: Ronald Frederick Schmitt

Patent number: 5904879Abstract: An integrated liquefaction and gasification process converts bulk particulate halogen-containing waste plastic materials with minimal particle size reduction into a synthesis gas and a non-leachable, vitreous environmentally nontoxic slag. The process involves melting and cracking bulk particulate halogen-containing waste plastic material to form a lower boiling point, lower molecular weight halogen-containing oil composition which then undergoes partial oxidation in a quench gasifier to produce a synthesis gas. Any hazardous gases, liquids or solids that are produced can be purified into commercially valuable byproducts or recycled to the process, which does not release hazardous materials to the environment.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1997Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: Texaco IncInventors: John Duckett Winter, Paul Ellis Brickhouse, Ronald Frederick Tyree, John S. Patent number: 5905488Abstract: As an electronic pen (16) moves across a display screen (12), a position resolver (14) generates a series of x,y-coordinate positions which are sent to a remote computer system (20) having a relatively high latency or time delay before the positions are processed and intended display information is returned to the memory cells of a memory array (24) which controls the display on the display screen (12). During the time delay, a temporary display of the trajectory is created, preferably in light gray or another distinguishable color. Each x,y-coordinate position is compared (32) with an immediately preceding coordinate position to determine whether the pen has moved. If so, the new coordinate is stored in a memory (36) which stores a preselected number of the most recent coordinate positions and to a toggle circuit (38) which toggles a preselected bit of the display information stored in the corresponding memory cell of the memory array.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1996Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Alan J. Patent number: 5901918Abstract: An apparatus and method for winding tissue webs into a parent roll is disclosed which results in greater uniformity in sheet basis weight, machine direction stretch and bulk when comparing the corresponding sheet properties taken from representative locations throughout the roll. The apparatus and method includes engaging the tissue web against a reel spool with a flexible member such as a transfer belt which traverses an unsupported span between two support rolls. The web is transferred from the transfer belt to the parent roll as the parent roll is urged against the sheet/transfer belt at a point within the unsupported span. The resulting deflection of the transfer belt is detected and, in response, the reel spool position is changed to control the deflection at a desired level. Accordingly, a predetermined light nip pressure can be applied to the roll as the tissue web is wound thereon and large parent rolls of high bulk tissue can be manufactured with desired properties when unwound.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1997Date of Patent: May 11, 1999Assignee: Valmet-Karlstad ABInventors: Bernt Erik Ingvar Klerelid, Tommy Rolf Karlsson, Randall James Le Valley, Ronald Frederick Gropp, Philip Sim Lin, Brian Douglas Klaubert

Patent number: 5791627Abstract: An engine mounting system for an internal combustion engine includes a bracket adapted for attachment to an engine and detachable locator members which are attached to fasteners extending axially from the bracket through the frame member of a vehicle. The detachable locator members wedge the engine mounting brackets into a desired location upon the frame crossmember. Once the engine has been decked, the locator members may be removed so as to allow installation of additional fastening elements.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1997Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ronald Frederick Fisch, Mark Hollis Jackson

Patent number: 5768126Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for mixing multiple digital audio streams originating from or destined for multiple tasks in a computer system. In one aspect, a method is carried out in a computer system having a processor. The processor executes a multitasking operating system that has a kernel, executes a first task under control of the operating system, and while executing the first task executes a second task under control of the operating system. First and second audio streams are provided, each made up of a series of digital audio samples representing an audio signal and affiliated, respectively, with the first and second tasks. By executing a portion of the operating system kernel with the processor, the first and second audio streams are mixed to provide a mixed audio stream made up of a series of digital audio samples representing a superposition of the first and second audio signals.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1995Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Ronald A. Patent number: 5757424Abstract: A system enables high-resolution videoconferencing images to be transmitted, without extreme demands on bandwidth. A mosaicing camera sequentially samples a series of small portions of a general scene, and a composite image of the entire general scene is transmitted. Simultaneously, an individual small area of the general scene where high time resolution is desirable is sampled at a high time resolution by a dedicated camera. The high-time-resolution images are then patched into the composite image.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1995Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Ronald A. Frederick

Patent number: 5733672Abstract: An acceptor material for printing by ink-jet primers forms water-resistant, light-stable ink records with aqueous ink jet inks. The material comprises a support such as polyester film and a coating containing a water-soluble phospholipid mordant that forms insoluble compounds with and immobilizes the dyestuffs of the ink jet inks and a water managing polymer, preferably, hardened gelatin, which quickly renders the material dry-to-the-touch after contact with the aqueous ink.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1996Date of Patent: March 31, 1998Assignee: Labelon CorporationInventor: Ronald Frederick Lambert

Patent number: 5485212Abstract: In a method and apparatus for producing a signal for transmission to a receiver, a video signal is converted to digital form and the data of sequential frames of the signal are arranged in a plurality of blocks of pixel data that numerically represent visual characteristics of the respective pixels of the frame image. Each block is further organized as a matrix of pixel data. The pixel data of the blocks of a "previous" video frame, and a current video frame, are stored in a memory. A row of each block of the current video signal is compared with the corresponding row of the previous video frame, and a list is made of blocks in which the averages of the pixel data exceed a predetermined threshold. The pixel data of the listed blocks with lossy compression, and is encoded for transmission along with high definition data of a predetermined number of blocks of unchanged data.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1993Date of Patent: January 16, 1996Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Ronald A. Patent number: 3954613Abstract: A filter apparatus comprises a filter screen for filtering liquid carrying solids to remove at least some of the solids from the liquid. A nozzle is arranged adjacent the filter screen for removing solids deposited on the filter screen during a filtering operation, a variable speed drive causes relative movement between the filter screen and the nozzle such that deposited solids are removed from successive portions of said filter screen, and a control unit controls the speed of the relative movement in dependence upon the degree of blockage of the filter screen by the solids deposited on the filter screen. Throttling the discharge of the filtered liquid causes liquid to flow from the side of the filter screen remote from the nozzle back through the screen into the nozzle which is provided with an inlet having an adjustable cross-sectional area for varying the flow therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1973Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Inventor: Ronald Frederick Worlidge
