  • Publication number: 20080058933
Abstract: The present invention provides a device and methodology for use in spinal fusion surgeries. An implant is proved for forming a rigid structure between adjoining vertebrae in a patient. The implant is a cage defined by at least a first end, second end, first side, and second side surface, wherein first and second side surfaces extend substantially parallel to each other to span a space between adjoining vertebrae and first and second ends interconnect said first side surface and second side surface. The cage incorporates one or more flexible joints that allow the cage to be deformed for insertion into a patient. The ability to deform the cage allows a greater ease and flexibility in inserting and positioning the implant.

  • Publication number: 20070018091
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of sample preparation for use in obtaining elemental isotope ratios of a material by accelerator mass spectrometry. The method comprises forming the material into a sample without any substantial chemical alteration of the material. The invention also provides a sample for use in obtaining elemental isotope ratios of a material.

  • Publication number: 20060194341
Abstract: Library of compounds or their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, each compound being associated with information on its chemical identity and structure, wherein at least two of the compounds is labelled with radioisotope characterised in that the radioisotope is an AMS active radioisotope; A solid support having a compound or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt as hereindefined bound thereto, the compound being associated with information on its chemical identity and structure and comprising a radioisotope, characterised in that the radioisotope is an AMS active radioisotope as hereinbefore defined; Process for the preparation of a library of compounds as claimed in any of claims 1 to 19 comprising radioisotope labelling a plurality of compounds, each compound being associated with information on its chemical identity and structure characterised in that labelling is with an AMS active radioisotope; A kit therefor; Method for selecting one or more candidate compounds comprising screening a library of the inve

  • Publication number: 20060150699
Abstract: An instrument and method for bending a surgical implant, such as a spinal rod, includes a lever pivotally connected to a handle through a movable linkage system. The movable linkage system includes one or more bearing surfaces for applying a force to a first portion of the surgical implant while a rod seat connected to the handle holds an adjacent second portion of the surgical implant in a fixed position, thereby causing the surgical implant to bend between the first and second portion. The instrument can be easily operated using a single hand, is easy to control and requires a relatively small amount of force to bend a surgical implant. The instrument can include an automatic advancement means for advancing the surgical implant after bending to bend another portion of the surgical implant by a selected amount. The instrument can also be used for bending spinal rods having a non-circular cross-section in multiple planes.

  • Publication number: 20060084986
Abstract: The present invention includes pin guides and methods for placing pins in adjacent vertebrae. The present invention also includes methods for placing pins in adjacent vertebrae using the pin guides described herein. The present invention also includes an intervertebral implant insertion and alignment instrument, a distraction instrument, an intervertebral implant insertion guide, and methods for inserting an implant into an intervertebral space. Despite existing tools and techniques, present positioning of implants in intervertebral spaces and pins in adjacent vertebrae often depend on a surgeon's skill, experience and technique. Practice of the present invention can aide in the placement of an implant into an intervertebral space and placement of pins in adjacent vertebrae, e.g., midline to the coronal plane spine and/or parallel to vertebral endplates that abut the intervertebral space.

  • Publication number: 20060036260
Abstract: An instrument for guiding a spinal rod into a rod-receiving portion of an implant comprises a linear portion comprising two relatively moveable shafts, an actuator portion coupled to the linear portion for moving the spinal rod relative to the implant and a handle portion for moving the shafts to actuate the actuator portion. The actuator portion holds the rod in place until the surgeon inserts a setscrew or other device for securing the rod to the anchor. The actuator portion further defines a path for inserting and securing a locking device, such as a setscrew, for securing the rod in the implant while also holding the rod in the implant. The path for the screw is aligned with the rod-holding portion of the implant. Using the instrument, a surgeon can guide a rod into a selected position in the implant, reposition the spine to match the contour of the rod, hold the rod in the selected position and secure the rod to the implant.
