Patent number: 6202871Abstract: A container assembly includes a container and a closure that has plural vents formed proximate its top member, preferably at a transition between the top member and the skirt. The closure includes a feature that spaces apart an edge of a liner, outside of which the vents are formed, and provides tamper protection. The closure and the container neck form a top and corner seal therebetween while the closure is in a fully closed position, and provide a gap when the closure is in a vented position. P gases within the container escape through the gap and the vents when the closure is unthreaded from the fully closed to the vented position. The vents may be configured such that the vent outlet is oriented substantially vertically to vertically direct the outbound gases to prevent closure blow-off and to avoid impinging against a user's hand.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1999Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Technologies CorporationInventor: Ronald L. Patent number: 5964363Abstract: A compression failure resistant tamper evident bottle cap includes a skirt with a lower edge, and a tamper-evident band formed integrally with the skirt and having structure for engaging beneath a retaining flange on the bottle so as to prevent subsequent withdrawal of the band. Frangible bridges connect the band to the lower edge of the skirt. To prevent destruction of the bridges as the cap is forced onto the bottle during installation, the skirt has one or more tabs or the like, extending downward over a portion of the band, for preventing undue diametral expansion of the tamper evident band as it passes over the retaining flange.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1998Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Technologies CorporationInventors: Ronald L. Kelly, Michael T. Vavrik, Lino Dreyer

Patent number: 5727705Abstract: The TE-band (3) of a closure cap for closure of a container is provided with retaining elements (5) which protrude radially inwards and upwards to the base of the closure cap from the inner surface of the TE-bank (3). Each retaining element (5) comprises a retaining surface (6) terminating in a retaining edge (7). The retaining edges engage beneath an engagement surface (10) on the mouth of a container when the closure cap is in position on said container. The retaining edge (7) are formed as a concave segment and all retaining edges (7) together define substantially a circle. The circle is coaxial with the engagement surface of a container mouth and has a diameter which is smaller than the outer diameter of the engagement surface of the container mouth.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1996Date of Patent: March 17, 1998Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Technologies CorporationInventor: Ronald L. Patent number: 5622273Abstract: A plastic closure includes an annular ring durably attached to the container, and a sealing assembly installed in the ring to seal the mouth. The sealing assembly includes a plug having a sealing lip on its lower face and a release lever connected to the plug by a flexible hinge. A tab on the release lever can be lifted to pry the sealing assembly out of the opening. The ring has a free edge directed downwardly and inwardly so as to permit the plug to pass easily through the opening during assembly, or resealing, but to resist removal of the plug sufficiently to prevent it from being forced off the container by pressure within the container.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1995Date of Patent: April 22, 1997Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc.Inventor: Ronald L. Kelly

Patent number: 5443175Abstract: A can closure includes a plastic insert permanently installed in a hole in the can top, and a plug which seats in a pouring aperture extending through the insert. Locking dogs on both the insert and the plug provide a bayonet-type connection so that the container can be resealed after its contents have been partially used. Protrusions on the locking dogs prevent the plug from being fully removed until pressure within the container has been relieved.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1994Date of Patent: August 22, 1995Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc.Inventors: Ronald L. Kelly, Mike Price

Patent number: 5400913Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure serves as a closure for a container (2) which, at its container neck (3), possesses at least one locking surface (5) with which the retaining elements (6) of the tamper indicating band (7) are able to engage. The tamper-indicating band (7) possesses an upper portion (10) which extends downwards from the cap skirt (12) and which is connected with this by a frangible line (11). A plurality of retaining elements (6) are provided on the upper portion (10) of the tamper-indicating band (7). The retaining elements (6) are in each case connected with the adjacent retaining element by a flexible web (13). Each of the retaining elements (6) possesses at least one wedge shape (8) on its surface oriented towards the container neck (3).Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1992Date of Patent: March 28, 1995Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal CompanyInventor: Ronald L. Patent number: 5356019Abstract: A plastic tamper-indicating closure (1) possesses a closure cap (2) on which, by means of weakened web portions (5), a tamper-indicating band (6) is fixed. The tamper-indicating band (6) is provided with a number of blocking elements (8). The blocking elements (8) are connected with the tamper-indicating band via integral hinges (7). During screwing onto the container neck, the blocking elements (8) can be pivoted upwards and radially outwards into a first closed position (I). As opposed to this, during opening of the tamper-indicating closure the blocking elements are pivoted downwards and radially inwards into a second opening position (II). With that, the effective internal diameter will be reduced, by which means the blocking element will be held in engagement with the corresponding locking surface on a container neck.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1992Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc.Inventor: Ronald L.
