  • Method of making membrane electrode assemblies

    Abstract: A method of making a membrane electrode assembly includes forming an unbonded membrane electrode assembly and forming a bonding assembly by contacting a first surface of at least one absorbent material against at least one surface of the unbonded membrane electrode assembly, the at least one absorbent material containing a liquid. The membrane electrode assembly includes an anode gas diffusion layer, a cathode gas diffusion layer, an anode catalyst, a cathode catalyst, and a polymer electrolyte membrane interposed between the anode catalyst and the cathode catalyst. The method further includes heating the bonding assembly to effect bonding of at least two components, at least a portion of the liquid being removed.
