Abstract: A system and method for policy-based registration of client devices is provided. Policy-based registration may use registration keys to register devices on a network. For example, registration keys may include policy assignments, folder assignments, group assignments, or other assignments for registering, identifying, and managing the device on the network. Devices can register one or more times (e.g., using one or more registration keys), resulting in the device being added to any number of folders and groups. Further, the policies may be used to control a registration process or to enforce registration rules. As such, administrators can construct folders or groups of devices with a set of keys, providing a consistent mechanism to easily register and manage a device.

By seamlessly integrating multiple authoritative sources, administrators can make assignments to users across multiple authoritative source domains, and queries to the sources will always be up-to-date without having to perform synchronization processes.

Abstract: A method and system for imaging a workstation (or other device) and then associating that image with a specific device are disclosed. The present invention enables an administrator to take an image of a basic workstation (with minimum or no applications) and then when the image is downloaded to the workstation, the service may look into a Directory and download with the image the set of files associated with an Application Object that has been associated with the image in the Directory. Another embodiment of the present invention further provides a method and system for applying an image to a workstation that had never been imported into the tree. A rules-based system may be implemented to enable one or more workstations that are booting to find the image and have it applied.

A client may send registration information to the import service after locating the import service using the DNS. The import service may then create a workstation object based on at least a portion of the registration information.
