  • Publication number: 20110104501
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of preparing aqueous emulsions of resins and additives, to provide coating compositions and additives which maintain solvent-like application and performance properties yet have reduced volatile organic content. The compositions and additives contain an organic phase, an aqueous phase, and an emulsifier. The emulsifier is preferably a polyolefin aminoester, a substituted alkanolamine, or a mixture thereof, a polyalkylene glycol ether, or an orange oil emulsifier. The compositions of the invention are particularly useful as coatings and coating additives that are applied to substrates, such as wood and plastics.

  • Publication number: 20090143502
Abstract: Aqueous dispersions containing hydrophobic materials that are useful as reduced volatile organic content may be utilized as a coating, a stain, a resin, a polymer, or an additive. Specifically, the aqueous dispersion may contain one or more of a carboxyalkyl cellulose ester, such as carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate, a fluorosurfactant, such as a polyoxetane fluorosurfactant or a fluoroaliphatic polymeric ester based surfactant, a water dispersible resin, and optionally, a C-11 ketone and/or surfactant.

  • Patent number: 7026470
Abstract: A method for improving holdout on a coated, cellulosic substrate, such as a man-made fiber board. The process comprises the steps of applying an aqueous carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate size composition to a man-made fiber substrate, forming a sized substrate. The sized substrate is then dried. Next, an aqueous coating composition is applied to form a coated, sized substrate. The coated, sized substrate is then dried. According to the invention, the aqueous carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate size composition used in the process comprises carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate, water, and an organic solvent. The invention also relates to a sized, man-made fiber substrate comprising a man-made fiber substrate and a carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate size. The carboxymethyl cellulose acetate butyrate may be either an internal sizing agent, or an external sizing agent.
