  • Patent number: 4858902
Abstract: A bench vise includes a stationary structure carrying one clamping jaw. A square section tube is arranged to cantilever outwardly from the stationary structure and the tube carries a second clamping jaw. Coarse adjustment can be obtained by tilting the tube about a horizontal axis and then moving it with respect to the stationary structure. Fine adjustment is obtained and clamping forces are exerted by operation of a screw-operated mechanism carried by the tube and acting on the clamping jaw carried by the tube. The tube can be withdrawn from the stationary structure and rotated through 90.degree. in either direction to obtain an alternative orientation of the clamping jaw carried by the tube.

  • Patent number: 4291869
Abstract: A workbench of a collapsible nature includes a top structure comprising a pair of vice members. These can either be spaced from a supporting surface in a first work-mode at saw-horse height or, by lowering of legs, in a second work-mode at full height. Each vise member is provided with two rows of cylindrical bores in which the shank portions of abutment members are axially and slidably received with a snug fit and are thereafter rotatable about a vertical axis to enable the gripping faces of the abutment members to self-align with a workpiece clamped between the abutment members.

  • Patent number: 4276955
Abstract: In the illustrative embodiments disclosed, a folding portable multiple-purpose work unit is interchangeably useable in three main work modes: as a stepladder, as a step stool, and as a small workbench having a vise. The substructure of the unit includes front and rear leg frames, the front frame having two steps, and is foldable to allow ready storage of the unit. The vise unit forms the top of the substructure. A seat member covers the vise unit when the work unit is in the step stool and stepladder modes and pivots to uncover the vise unit in the workbench mode. When so pivoted off the vise unit, the seat member forms a tool tray which also blocks use of the work unit as a stool or ladder while the seat is not in place.

  • Patent number: 4256294
Abstract: In the illustrative embodiment of the invention disclosed, a portable workbench and carrying case therefor includes front and rear vise beams, a pair of independently operable vise screw rods for moving the vise beams relatively towards and away from one another, and a six-sided case that is foldable between a closed, carrying condition in which it encloses the workbench and an open, use position in which it is adapted to overlie a table-top and cooperate therewith to facilitate use of the workbench.

  • Patent number: 4236599
Abstract: In the illustrative embodiments disclosed, a novel step stool structure includes the sitting and climbing features of a traditional step stool and, in addition, a vise unit affording a vise action and a working surface for carpentry or other tasks. The vise unit comprises a pair of relatively movable vise beams, the upper surfaces of which provide the working surface. One or more movable seat-forming members, by themselves or in conjunction with the vise beams, provide a seat for use of the stool in the traditional step stool sense. Movement of the movable member or members allows conversion of the stool from a seat mode of use to a workbench mode of use and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 4223881
Abstract: A workbench of saw-horse height has its top formed by a pair of longitudinally extending top members which form a working surface and which are carried by transverse supports. One of the top members is fixed with respect to the supports but the other is horizontally movable towards and away from the fixed top member to form a vice between the opposed vertical faces of the top members. Adjacent each end the top members are interconnected by screw threaded rods which are restrained against axial movement at their ends adjacent the fixed top members but which are received in nuts connected to the movable top member. The connection of the nut to the movable top member allows independent operation of the screw threaded rods to permit the gap between the vertical faces to be greater at one end than at the other.

  • Patent number: 4202428
Abstract: A foldable ladder is disclosed having a central and two outer parallel support members or "stiles" and a plurality of steps connected between the central and the outer stiles. Each step is arranged to fold between an erected position, in which it extends generally at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the stile to which it is connected, and a storage position in which the step lies generally parallel to the central stile with the outer stile to which it is connected extending parallel to and in close juxtaposition with the central stile. Engaging means are provided adjacent the upper end of the central stile for holding cooperating engaging means of a supporting member such as another ladder section (forming an extension ladder) or a prop extending to ground (forming a step ladder).

  • Patent number: 4157174
Abstract: In the illustrative embodiments of the invention disclosed, a portable, dual-height workbench has front and rear elongate vice members forming the work surface of the bench and a collapsible supporting structure which allows selective positioning of the work surface at either workbench height or sawhorse height above the floor. The collapsible supporting structure includes front and rear, flat leg frames pivoted at the upper ends thereof to the top structure of the bench and closed at the lower ends thereof by horizontal cross pieces. The leg frames pivot relative to the bench top structure between an erected position, in which the frames extend downward from the bench top structure in front-to-rear splayed relation, and a collapsed position, in which the leg frames extend generally parallel to the working surface of the bench.

  • Patent number: 4127260
Abstract: A portable workbench having a top surface including two vise members, one of which is connected to the supporting structure by a pair of releasable gripping devices which enables the vise member to move, in the plane of the support provided by the underlying support framework, toward the other vise member in a rectilinear motion and also in a rotational motion relative to the second vise member. One or the other of the vise members is also connected to the supporting framework by a pair of vise-operating devices which can be operated to exert a force for moving the vise member a small incremental distance toward the first vise member under force to effect the clamping action. A folding leg structure is provided to support the top surface at convenient working height above the floor.
