Patent number: 8967078Abstract: A method of masking a component includes installing a flexible gasket over a portion of a component masking area leaving an unmasked area exposed. A backer is installed over the flexible gasket to compress the flexible gasket between the backer and the portion. The flexible gasket and the backer are secured to the component to provide an assembly. The assembly is deposited into a slurry with an abrasive media to polish the unmasked area, in one example. The flexible gasket and backer prevent abrasive media from reaching the masked area. The flexible gasket and backer can be removed from the component and reused on other similarly shaped components.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2009Date of Patent: March 3, 2015Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Ronald R. Soucy, Richard W. LaFranchise

Patent number: 8839739Abstract: A masking apparatus is provided for masking a workpiece, for example a turbine blade, to protect portions thereof from the deposition of coating material thereon during selective application of a coating material to other portions of the workpiece. The masking apparatus includes an enclosure formed of a first mask half body defining a first cavity half and a second mask half body defining a second cavity half. The first mask half body and the second mask half body mate in assembly to form a workpiece cavity it which the workpiece may be enclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2010Date of Patent: September 23, 2014Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Ronald R. Soucy, Anita Rebarchak

Patent number: 6761807Abstract: The present invention relates to a molded tooling fixture for supporting an airfoil during an electrochemical stripping process. The tooling fixture comprises a holder for receiving the airfoil, which holder has a slot in which a serrated portion of the airfoil is positioned. The holder is formed from an electrically non-conductive material such as molded plastic. The first slot has at least one serrated surface which mates with at least one serration on the airfoil. The fixture further includes a support arm on which the holder is supported. The support arm is also formed from an electrically non-conductive material such as molded plastic. Still further, the fixture includes a rod formed from an electrically conductive material which sits in a groove in the support arm and which contacts a lower surface of the airfoil.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2002Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Ramon M.
