    Abstract: A seal assembly for packaging machines facilitates the heat sealing of layers of material at the mouth of loaded bags. An operator may insert the layers of material between a pressure pad and a seal member positioned in a spaced position. Upon activation of a switch by the operator, an oscillating signal is applied to a solenoid to actuate movement of the pressure pad toward the seal member with a relatively soft force. An optical sensor senses when the pressure pad moves within a predetermined distance from the seal member and generates a sensor signal. In response to the sensor signal, a relatively constant voltage signal is applied to the solenoid to actuate movement of the pressure pad with a relatively high seal or clamping force to secure the layers of material against the seal member. The sensor signal also triggers energization of a heating element carried by the seal member to effectuate the heat seal between the layers of material.

    Abstract: Method and circuitry is disclosed for controlling and stabilizing temperature of a resistance heat sealing element used in packaging operations. Temperature of the heat sealing element is measured by monitoring its resistance by means of a current sensing resistor placed in series with the heat sealing element. The resistivity of the heat sealing element is a function of temperature and current measurement, assuming substantially constant applied voltage, is an accurate measure of sealing element temperature. The circuitry reduces application of electric power to the sealing element in response to current in the sealing element dropping below a predetermined level. The circuit either continues application of electric power, or increases it, in response to the current being above the predetermined level. Circuitry is also provided for compensating for undesirable line voltage changes to maintain the heating element at a constant temperature.

    Abstract: A detector 10 used to sense the presence of control markings 20 on a moving web 12. The detector responds to abrupt changes in intensity of electromagnetic radiation rather than merely to absolute intensity values. Gradual changes in or a constant level of detected radiation or detector temperature do not change the magnitude of the abrupt changes in radiation intensity to which the detector responds. This capability allows the detector to distinguish between electromagnetic radiation emitted by wavelength-shifting control marks 20 and changes in web background and/or ambient radiation. A filter 38 is interposed between a photo diode 36 in the detector 10 and the web 12 to further enhance detector performance.

    Abstract: A material dispensing apparatus including drive structure for driving a feeder bowl is disclosed. A control circuit for controlling the drive includes a Hall effect amplitude sensing transducer for monitoring the magnitude of bowl vibrations and a braking circuit for controlling the damping of vibratory motion after the requisite amount of material has been fed from the feeder bowl. The braking circuit selectively reverses the current flow through a drive coil which comprises a portion of the drive circuitry of the apparatus. This current reversal disrupts the rhythm of forced oscillations which feed material from the bowl and causes bowl motion to be damped. A mechanical brake coupled to the bowl complements the braking action of braking circuit and locks the bowl in place to prevent accidental dispensing of parts.
