  • Patent number: 8286449
Abstract: A neck ring for a glass container forming machine includes two neck ring sections each consisting essentially of a neck ring body and an insert on the body. The inserts have opposed surfaces for forming closure attachment features on a container neck finish molded in the neck ring. Each neck ring body is of die-formed powder metal construction and is set around the associated insert. The inserts preferably form the entire glass-contacting portion of the neck ring. The neck ring bodies preferably are of sintered bronze or steel construction, and the inserts preferably are of nickel, bronze or steel construction. The body and insert preferably are sintered together for a metallurgical bond.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 26, 2007
Date of Patent: October 16, 2012
    Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.
Inventors: William E. Bosken, Jr., Mark P. Dodd, Ronald T. Myers

  • Patent number: 6743491
Abstract: A laminated glass container has an inner layer of amber glass surrounded by an outer layer of flint glass. The container is manufactured by forming a cased glass stream, having an amber glass core and a flint glass casing layer, cutting the stream into individual gobs and molding the gobs into containers, all sufficiently rapidly that the amber glass does not have an opportunity chemically to react with the flint glass.

Date of Patent: June 1, 2004
    Assignee: Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc.

  • Patent number: 6133999
Abstract: Apparatus for measuring glass layer thickness in the sidewall of a glass container in which a container is placed in a bath of oil having an index of refraction matching that of the container outer sidewall surface. The body of the container is engaged within the bath to permit rotation while restraining lateral motion as the finish of the container is rotated. Light energy is directed through the bath and tangentially through the sidewall of the container so as to establish a pattern of light energy as a function of sidewall layer thickness, and layer thickness is determined as a function of such light pattern. As applied specifically to measuring thickness of the casing glass layer in a cased glass container in accordance with the preferred method of the invention, such casing glass thickness is determined as a function of the pattern in the light energy that emerges from the oil bath.

  • Patent number: 5711777
Abstract: A parallel shear apparatus (20) for simultaneously shearing a plurality of streams of molten glass (A, B, C) into gobs comprising opposed carriages (22, 24) which are repetitively moved along rectilinear opposed paths toward and away from one another. Each of the carriages carries a plurality of shear blades (40a, 40b, 40c/42a, 42b, 42c) which cooperate with one another to shear the glass streams into gobs when the carriages are positioned close to one another. The shear blades carried by each of the carriages have internal flow passages (66) to permit the blades to be internally liquid cooled by liquid entering the carriages from inlet lines (52, 56), and the blades carried by one of the carriages (22) are biased by compression springs (82) into contact with the blades carried by the other carriage (24) to prevent excessive contact loads between the blades in their shearing positions.

  • Patent number: 5581355
Abstract: A method and finish meter for detecting the presence of and measuring the thickness of a metal oxide coating at multiple locations on a sealing surface of a rim of a glass container. The finish meter includes a sensing head for directing a beam of light from a light source against a container and detecting reflected light and a means for positioning the light against the sealing surface of the glass container such that the longitudinal central axis of the sensing head is substantially perpendicular to the sealing surface of the rim of the glass container.

  • Patent number: 4526600
Abstract: An improved method is provided for the lubrication of molds and delivery equipment which are employed in the production of glass articles wherein the viscous glass which is employed in the production of such articles is at least partially coated with a suitable lubricant prior to contact with the delivery equipment and/or prior to entry of the glass into the mold.
