    Abstract: An apparatus for reading machine-readable information from a record element, which has a forward direction filter that generates location clock pulses only when the record element is moving in the absolute forward direction. The utilization of these pulses to control the sampling of information prevents the mis-reading of information caused by velocity variations or reciprocative motion of the record element.
