  • Patent number: 5578222
Abstract: The invention provides a process for recovering abrasive grains from vitreous bonded materials by boiling the material in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal base.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 20, 1995
Date of Patent: November 26, 1996
    Assignee: Saint-Gobain/Norton Industrial Ceramics Corp.
Inventors: Ronald W. Trischuk, Ajay K. Garg, Arup K. Khaund
  • Patent number: 5372620
Abstract: Filamentary abrasive particles formed from a sol-gel alumina modified by rare earth metal oxides have excellent abrasive qualities.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 13, 1993
Date of Patent: December 13, 1994
Assignee: Saint Gobain/Norton Industrial Ceramics Corporation
Inventors: Robert A. Rowse, Ronald W. Trischuk
  • Patent number: 4960441
Abstract: Useful ceramic bodies can be made by mixing zirconia powder with seeded alumina gel, drying, and firing at a high enough temperature to convert the alumina in the gel to microcrystalline alpha alumina. Abrasive grits made in this way, with a zirconia content between 15 and 30 weight percent and at least half the zirconia in the tetragonal crystal form are particularly valuable for use in grinding wheels for snagging steels.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 9, 1988
Date of Patent: October 2, 1990
    Assignee: Norton Company
Inventors: Scott W. Pellow, Ronald W. Trischuk, Christopher E. Knapp, Ralph Bauer
  • Patent number: 4657754
Abstract: Fine alumina powders for making alumina bodies are produced by seeding of a non-alpha alumina with submicron alpha alumina particles, firing, and crushing and milling the fired product to a fine powder. The powder so produced may be formed by conventional techniques such as pressing, granulating, slip casting, tape casting, and extrusion, and sintered to produce the desired fired product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 21, 1985
Date of Patent: April 14, 1987
    Assignee: Norton Company
Inventors: Ralph Bauer, Arup K. Khaund, Ronald W. Trischuk, Joseph Similia
  • Patent number: 4457767
Abstract: Abrasive properties of co-fused alumina zirconia are improved by the addition of from 0.1 to 2% of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 to the fusion mix and quenching the fused product. Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 ores containing mostly Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 with lesser amounts of rare earth oxides can be substituted for high purity Y.sub.2 O.sub.3.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 29, 1983
Date of Patent: July 3, 1984
    Assignee: Norton Company
Inventors: Simon Poon, Ronald W. Trischuk
