    Abstract: The invention relates to a new and improved process and apparatus for the production of high purity hydrogen by steam reforming. The apparatus is an integrated flameless distributed combustion-membrane steam reforming (FDC-MSR) or reactor for steam reforming of a vaporizable hydrocarbon to produce H2 and CO2, with minimal CO, and minimal CO in the H2 stream. The flameless distributed combustion drives the steam reforming reaction which pro-vides great improvements in heat exchange efficiency and load following capabilities. The reactor may contain multiple flameless distributed combustion chambers and multiple hydrogen-selective, hydrogen-permeable, membrane tubes. The feed and reaction gases may flow through the reactor either radially or axially. A further embodiment of the invention involves producing high purity hydrogen by dehydrogenation using an integrated FDC-membrane de-hydrogenation reactor.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a contactor apparatus and method for removing solvent from a polymer cement. The resulting polymer is substantially free of solvent and exhibits improved porosity and more uniform particle size distribution. In one embodiment, a contactor apparatus consists of a cylindrical casing having a high pressure section, a convergence section, a high velocity section, a divergence section, and a discharge section. The polymer cement is introduced into the high pressure section to significantly and unexpectedly improve solvent removal. The convergence and divergence sections preferably have cross-sectional areas that correspond to an effective angle from about 4° to about 65°. The polymer cement is mixed with high pressure steam. After converging, the polymer cement forms more uniform droplets due to high shear of steam. In the divergence and discharge sections, the polymer is substantially devolatized.

    Abstract: A process for regenerating used catalysts having deposited on their surface contaminants comprising carbonaceous and/or sulfur-containing materials which comprises:a) contacting said particles in a fluidized bed with an oxygen-containing gas at an elevated temperature for a time which does not exceed about twenty minutes wherein at least about fifty percent by weight of the sulfur contaminants are removed, andb) passing the thus treated catalyst particles to a moving belt and causing the belt to move said catalyst particles through a furnace for at least about two hours, wherein said furnace is maintained at a temperature sufficient to remove the remaining portion of the contaminants from the particles.
