Patent number: 5177143Abstract: The invention relates to novel gelloid composition comprising a crosslinked non-silicone polymer having an olefinic unsaturated content of less than 10 mole percent and having dispersed therein a liquid in an amount of from about 20% to about about 95% by weight based on the weight of the liquid and polymer and from 0 to 0.3 volume fraction of a filler, said cross-linked polymera) if derived from a solid, relatively high molecular weight polymer, having a gel fraction of at least about 50%, orb) if derived from a liquid, relatively low molecular weight polymer, having at least about 0.1 crosslinks per weight average molecule;said composition having a modulus of (1+2.5v+14.1v.sup.2)x dynes/cm.sup.2 wherein x is less than 5.times.10.sup.5 at 30.degree. C. and greater than 5.times.10.sup.2 at 90.degree. C., and v is the volume fraction of the filler, with the proviso that, if the crosslinked polymer is prepared from a solid high molecular eight polymer, the storage modulus at 140.degree. C.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1990Date of Patent: January 5, 1993Assignee: Raychem CorporationInventors: Rong J. Chang, Lester T. Toy

Patent number: 5098752Abstract: A method for covering a substrate comprising the steps of:positioning over the substrate an assembly including a recoverable elastomeric sleeve and a mandrel upon which the sleeve is mounted under tension in an expanded condition such that upon release of the tension the sleeve tends to assume a smaller cross-sectional dimension and thereupon cover the substrate; the mandrel having a generally tubular configuration and defining a series of spaced apart, substantially longitudinal projections extending radially outwardly, the sleeve being in substantial contact with the longitundinal projections; and, withdrawing the mandrel from the sleeve by sliding the mandrel longitudinally away from the sleeve while maintaining its position over the workpiece, the sleeve thereby progressively assuming a smaller cross-sectional dimension to cover the substrate as the mandrel is progressively withdrawn.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1990Date of Patent: March 24, 1992Assignee: Raychem CorporationInventors: Rong J. Chang, Mario A. Gutierrez, John W. Hoffman, John A. Midgley

Patent number: 5071271Abstract: An ink ribbon inking device, which utilizes a motor to carry an eccentric shaft to push the core of an inking pen to move up and down permitting the ink contained in such an inking pen to intermittently flow downward, and simultaneously to drive two ink ribbon driving shafts to carry the ink ribbon of an ink ribbon cartridge to rotate. The ink ribbon of the ink ribbon cartridge is squeezed in between the eccentric shaft and the inking pen so that it is smeared with the ink during reciprocating motion of the core of the inking pen.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Inventors: Rong J. Chang, Fu C. Wang

Patent number: 4963698Abstract: The invention relates to a sealed cable article and method for sealing the area between two or more cables and between the cables and an enclosure with a shaped article at a location where the cables exit from the enclosure, the method comprising (a) providing a shaped article of a polymeric gel said gel having (i) a cone penetration value of about 30 to about 450 (10.sup.-1 mm), and (ii) an elongation of from about 25% to about 750%; (b) positioning the shaped article around the cables; and (c) positioning the enclosure such that it surrounds the shaped article. An article aspect of the invention comprises two or more cables, an enclosure surrounding the cables, and a polymeric gel having the properties as described above sealing the area between the cables and the enclosure.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1989Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: Raychem CorporationInventors: Rong J. Chang, John A. Midgley, Lester T. Toy

Patent number: 4915990Abstract: A cable splice is environmentally sealed by positioning around it a stretched sheet of a curable elastomeric composition, allowing the sheet to relax into engagement, and then curing the composition. The composition may comprise a polychloroprene elastomer and a polyepoxide and optionally a curing agent, the polyepoxide present in sufficient quantity that it can act as a plasticizer.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1988Date of Patent: April 10, 1990Assignee: Raychem CorporationInventor: Rong J. Patent number: 4656070Abstract: A shrinkable tubular article comprises a tubular inner elastomeric member held in a radially expanded configuration by a tubular outer restraining means. The restraining means is prepared from a blend of a relatively rigid thermoplastic material and a segmented copolymer having at least one segment compatible with the thermoplastic and at least one segment compatible with the elastomer of the inner member. Optionally, the restraining means contains a tackifier. The inner surface of the outer member and the outer surface of the inner member are directly bonded together (i.e. without an interfacial adhesive). The bond between the members is sufficiently strong to restrain the inner elastomer member from shrinking to, or toward, its unexpanded configuration. In addition, the bond weakens sufficiently on application of solvent to permit the elastomeric member to peel away from the restraining outer member.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1985Date of Patent: April 7, 1987Assignee: Raychem CorporationInventors: David D. Nyberg, Rong J. Chang, Lester T. Toy
