    Abstract: An aluminum borate whisker reinforced and toughened non-metallic matrix composite is provided, which specifically includes a non-metallic material reinforced and toughened with aluminum borate whiskers. The composite exhibits a higher bending strength and fracture toughness and a higher wear resistance. A method for preparing the composite is also provided. The method includes mixing the aluminum borate whiskers and the non-metallic material to form a mixture; and sintering the mixture by a vacuum hot press method, or molding the mixture.

The projection display may also include an adjustable opacity layer that is controlled based on detected ambient light levels. The projection display may also include an adjustable reflectivity layer. The adjustable diffuser and/or light source may be pixelated to increase contrast in the projection display.

    Abstract: A display may have a display panel with an array of pixels formed from light-emitting diodes. Optical films that help collimate and homogenize light from the light-emitting diode pixels may overlap the light-emitting diodes. A transparent cover may overlap the display. The transparent cover may have an outer surface and an opposing inner surface, which may have areas of compound surface curvature. Louvers that serve to reduce off-axis solar light reflections while allowing light from the display panel to be emitted may be formed from molded polymer supported by a transparent cover layer in the cover. A diffuser may be formed by embedding light-scattering particles in a polymer layer covering the louvers and/or by forming light-scattering surface structures such as ridges and/or other texture on the surface of the polymer layer. Electrically adjustable light modulator layers and electrically adjustable louvers may be used in the display.

The transparent cover may have an outer surface and an opposing inner surface. The outer surface and inner surface may be planar or may have a curved cross-sectional profile. An optical louver layer or other solar rejection layer may be interposed between the inner surface of the transparent cover and the display panel. The louver layer may have a series of elongated parallel louvers formed from an opaque polymer or other material. The louvers may be configured to block sunlight reflections while allowing images on the display panel to be viewed.

    Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method for forming a semiconductor device structure. In one embodiment, the method includes forming a fin structure having first semiconductor layers and second semiconductor layers alternatingly stacked, removing edge portions of the second semiconductor layers to form cavities between adjacent first semiconductor layers, selectively forming a passivation layer on sidewalls of the first semiconductor layers, forming a dielectric spacer on sidewalls of the second semiconductor layers and filling in the cavities, wherein the passivation layer is exposed. The method also includes removing the passivation layer, and forming an epitaxial source/drain feature so that the epitaxial source/drain feature is in contact with the first semiconductor layers and the dielectric spacers.

Also, the method includes forming a replacement spacer structure adjacent to the remaining portion of the initial spacer structure to form a combined spacer structure, wherein the combined spacer structure has an intermediate etch rate for the selected etchant that is less than the initial etch rate for a selected etchant. Further, the method includes etching the combined spacer structure with the selected etchant to form a final spacer structure.

    Abstract: A system may have an exterior display. The exterior display may display symbols that correspond to intended actions for the system or instructions for nearby viewers. The exterior display may include an array of light-emitting diodes, a collimator, a one-way filter to prevent sunlight from washing out the display, and a cover layer. The one-way filter may include a microlens array and a masking layer. The collimator is configured to collimate light from the array of light-emitting diodes and provide the collimated light to the one-way filter. The microlens array receives the collimated light and focuses the collimated light through a plurality of holes in the masking layer. In this way, the majority of display light is passed through the one-way filter towards a viewer. However, the majority of ambient sunlight is blocked by the masking layer, thus preserving a high contrast for the exterior display even in bright sunlight.
