Patent number: 11769882Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for an electrode for a lithium-ion battery cell. In one example, the electrode may include a current collector having two opposing sides, at least one of the two opposing sides being configured with a first coating layer disposed on the current collector at a first loading, where the first coating layer may include a first binder in a first weight ratio, and a second coating layer disposed on the first coating layer at a second loading, where the second coating layer may include a second binder in a second weight ratio, wherein the first weight ratio may be greater than the second weight ratio, and a ratio of the first loading to the second loading may be less than 1:2. In this way, direct current internal resistance of the lithium-ion battery cell may be decreased while maintaining or increasing adhesion within the electrode.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2021Date of Patent: September 26, 2023Assignee: A123 SYSTEMS, LLCInventors: Tae Kyoung Kim, Jun Wang, Ronnie Wilkins, Jordan Rubio, Ankita Faulkner, Zaiyuan Le, Xiqing Wang, Ting Huang

Patent number: 8709647Abstract: An electrochemical device includes a first electrode in electrical communication with a first current collector, a second electrode in electrical communication with a second current collector and a crosslinked solid polymer in contact with the first and second electrodes. At least one of the first and second electrodes includes a network of electrically connected particles comprising an electroactive material, and the particles of one electrode exert a repelling force on the other electrode when the first and second electrodes are combined with an uncrosslinked precursor to the solid polymer.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2011Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: A123 Systems LLCInventors: Antoni S. Gozdz, Richard K. Holman, Andrew L. Loxley, Ronnie Wilkins

Patent number: 8323831Abstract: A nanocomposite electrode that includes a current collector, an electroactive layer a conductive adhesive contacting the surface of the current collector and an interlayer region in electrical communication with the current collector and the electroactive material. The interlayer region is interposed between the current collector and the electroactive layer and includes a portion of the conductive adhesive intermixed with a portion of the electroactive layer. The electroactive layer includes electroactive material having a surface area of at least about 10 m2/g. The conductive adhesive may be at least partially soluble in electrode casting solvent. Electrochemical devices, such as lithium secondary cells, containing an electrode with an interlayer region are also provided, as are processes for making such electrodes and electrochemical devices.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2006Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: A123 Systems, Inc.Inventors: Ronnie Wilkins, Antoni S. Gozdz, Hung-Chieh Shiao
